Feroz, good to see you on here again and it sounds like you you're back on the "right" track again  A good RS recreation will be every bit as much fun as your 64RS and DDK is def the right place for advice.

I don't know of anything for sale but usual rules apply, keep looking and the more you see, the more you'll know what you want. Good luck!

Hi

Sanjay - Hope you are keeping well. What are you driving now? Do you still have the GT3 or have you gone for an early car (based on you being on ddk)? I looked at the ad for the car Canford Classics have and it looks lovely but I think I want something closer to the real thing. I'll give them a call and get some more details though as I have nothing but good things about them.

Nigel - Good to hear from you. Yes, I am looking forward to getting myself in to an early 911, I've been threatening to get one for a while but am a bit more determined this time around. People on ddk have been very helpful and generous with their time - its one of the nice things about the Porsche community. I have some good leads and like one car in particlar. I will try and look at a couple this weekend but any leads, tips, suggestions and advice are always welcome.

Regards

Feroz

PS - what is the difference between RS flares vs Carrera / SC arches? I've looked at pictures of both and am struggling to see the difference. If any one can enlighten me, I would be very grateful.

Hi Feroz, best of luck with the hunt for an RS rep, they are the most wonderful cars if you can find a good one.

Here's a pic of my old RS rep with the correct RS arches, you can see how the edge of the arch, the lip, is wider at the top than it is
at the bottom leading and trailing edges, the SC arches have a uniform lip all round.

Thanks both.

Mike - good thing you put the arrows on there as I would still be looking at the pictures trying to work out the difference! I obviously have a lot to learn but seems like I am in the right place.

I think my first priority is to get a car that drives like a 2.7 RS (I have been smitten since I first drove one in 1999) and then a car that looks, feels and smells like one.

For those that have experience of the real thing (and replicas), what are the key mechanical components that deliver the right feel? Engine and box etc are a given but what else adds to the experience?

Also, any views on whether a 73 (T or E) base car will be a better base than a 74 Carrera (impact bumper), despite the 74 Carrera being mechnically very similar. I would define "better" as being more authentic in feel / drive rather than just in year of manufacture.

The great thing about a correctly built RS rep is that it drives the same as the real thing, in fact Josh at Autofarm used to say that
mine drove better than a lot of the real ones!

The key is the 2.7 engine with mfi, that's where the throttle response comes from that makes them so special, couple that with
the lightweight body for the power to weight ratio and correctly set up suspension with the right dampers and you have the most
fantastic driving machine in the world, according to the latest Classic and Sportscar mag!

As for adding to the experience, it's about detail, correct interior, with the right door panels, carpet, gauges, steering wheel and
seats are incredibly important. For a lightweight check out the rear quarter windows in the picture above, the specially made trim
and glaverbel logo, as my old dad used to say, if it's worth doing do it right.

Which brings me to the final and I think most important point, use the right year shell as the base, any project like this will cost a
lot of money and to do it on the wrong year shell to me defeats the object, however many right parts you put on, however much
you spend on that motor it will always be the wrong year shell, and you will suffer for that one day when you want to sell it on.

All IMHO of course!

Here's a few more pictures to inspire you.......

Hi Mike

Thanks for the advice, give me a good idea as to what to prioritise in my serach. I accept that any car I buy will probably need a little tailoring to suit my needs but getting a good strating point seems the way to go.

Your car looks stunning by the way, good inspiration. i don't suppose its for sale is it?

just to add my twopenneth...I had exactly the same plan and bought a 74 Carrera with a plan to do RS rep. Once i started speaking to all the specialists, it became clear as Mike says, that however well done, it would still be a "backdate" which definitely limits the value. Also 74 carreras fully restored are quite valuable in their own right.

potentially a better plan is to buy a really nice early car and then retrofit the engine. There is an absolutely gorgeous 911 T at tuthills currently in aubergine, with Carrera rear arches and a 2.7 but no ducktail /decals / spoilers and it looks the dogs doo dahs.

finally just my personal opinion but I think RS reps have been slightly devalued by the number of cheap and nasty ones out there. If you talk to builders like Early 911 / Tuthills / Autofarm about what customers are asking for / speccing , the interest is all in ST and RSR reps...

2 final snippets.., I dont know what his plans are for it , but Nick Moss is worth talking to about a genuine 2.7 MFI engine he has. And if you have a v healthy budget, Gantspeed will sell you a 72 2.4E in component form with a fully restored shell, which could be a v good starting point (but big £)

Hi feroz,

Had the same dilemma you have a few years ago, went searching for a rep but got a touring ( albeit rusty) instead.

I used everyday for a while then got told off by the guy who looks after it for doing so !

Anyhow its at Alan's nearing the end of a total rebuild.. can't wait to get it back.

Good luck with the search.. its part of the fun

Maybe the owner of Mike's old baby might sell that??

Hi Mike

I did find something I really liked but the owner had a change of mind and has decided to hang on to the car for a little while.

Saw a car last weekend that was very nice and hopefully seeing another this weekend. As is often the case, the cars are scattered all over the country so its a case of dedicating enough time to see and evaluate the options. I'm also learning as I go.

Do you know of something that might be of interest?

They drive even better with a modified 3.0 litre injection engine in them . So much more grunty than a 2.7 motor and will be far more reliable as they're bombproof compared to older unit . Sounds the same but goes faster so it's the way to go .
The purists won't agree but i just give them a wave as i overtake !!!! lol

I disagree entirely of course and would add that an RS Replica without a 2.7 isn't a Replica anyway.
