Looking for the perfect all round classic? Here is a genuine thoroughbred that is fully prepared for historic racing but could just as easily be taken rallying or used for fast road fun and is docile enough to take to the shops! It is a Porsche 356 SC, the top of the range model in the 356's final incarnation, which means disc brakes all round and (originally) the 95bhp version of the 1600cc push-rod engine. Imported from Texas in 1991, the car was purchased by the last owner in 1997 as the basis for an historic racer. Over the next four years it was transformed to compete in HSCC competition (Historic Road Sports Class D). The total expenditure added up to over £20,000 and we have detailed records of all the work done. Here is a brief summary:
Brakes steering and suspension set up by Sigma Engineering, along with all work to prepare for racing, including full roll cage, plumbed in fire extinguisher and racing harness.
Full race engine by Andy Prill, total cost £7400. This produces 115-120 bhp while still retaining the flexibility for road use. The detailed engine spec is available on request.
Conversion to 12 volt electrics
Lightweight aluminium foam-filled fuel tank
Dual circuit brake system (2001)
Set of 6x15 factory Fuchs alloys (a set of 5.5" original chromed steel wheels comes with the car).
The car was raced in 2000/01, as shown by the scrutineering stickers on the roll cage, and also used on the road. The old MOTs indicate a total mileage of about 1400 after completion of the major work. Sadly the owner became ill and died and the last MOT was issued in June 2006, since when it has been dry stored. It has now been completely recommissioned by a Porsche specialist and comes with 12 months MOT.
The bodyshell is everything with the 356 and structurally the car is in excellent condition. The paintwork is also good, with just one or two minor blemishes and the interior tidy. The engine is a fuss-free starter and remarkably tractable, yet it will rev to 6800 rpm. Add in a positive and precise gear change and superb steering and you have a real driver's car.
This 356 is, to coin a phrase, reassuringly expensive. A late SC is hard enough to find, but cars with with this specification and history are rarely available. As it is fully tax paid and road legal in the UK, there will also be no difficulty in registering it in other EU countries. Miss this and it will be a long time before another comes along.
