Wing mirror ?

And so it starts.

Hayleys new car came without a wing mirror and she`s quite keen to see behind. There are no holes in either wing or door so we`ve got a blank canvas. Stoddards have this, which at $64 seems pretty reasonable....

Would that be suitable/correct for a 59A. It`s repro but thats fine, I just don`t want to buy a fuggly thing that don`t work.

That looks like an Aero repro mirror - from memory they were the most commonly fitted mirrors on 356A's.

Incidentally they're available from Roger Bray for ~ £64:

I have these fitted to my '56 356A LHD

Roger Bray fitted them so I know they are in the right place!

However I have never had very good rear view vision. So make sure that they are positioned as well as possible to actually be of use when on the move!

I have a couple(at least i am pretty sure there are 2 of them) in my shed that were left with me (by mistake) by another DDKers at Husbourne Crawley auto jumble.

they (look to me) are like new with all the fittings.

i could put you in touch with him regarding price. and then i could bring them up to you at the next opertunity. i'm sure they will be cheaper than buying brand new.

Thanks for that Andy, what with shipping, handling and tax $64 will soon become £64. I`ll enquire further.

Similar to the 911 then. You make a good point, measure 14 times, drill once. (as we say in the trade.

I had these on my speedster. I think that they look 'right' on the doors and not the wings. Take a look and see what you think, but they just don't look right to me on the wings.

I had no problem using them when they were close up.

Here's one fitted to an A

I think its an original one, has a stamp saying Made in Germany or Made W Germany - cant tell

If you need to look at holes etc ....

Here's a long shot of the original mirror on my sister car to yours.

Note it is not the mirror you have been looking at. Definitely needs mounting on the door though. If you want me to take measurements or come and have a look let me know.

Yes he has.

Felt a bit of a twit there for a moment but no, Mrs Mycar would prefer the swoopy aero type, so swoopy aero type it is.

i'm with Mrs Mycar on this one. infact i liked the swoopy aero type so much i had three fitted

seems my memory isn't too good. (sorry) the mirrors the other style

if anyone else is interested in it please contact Nigel for a price. i could deliver up north this week-end but, i don't want the responsability of handling the money.

The mirror shown on Hendriks 59 356A is a "Durant" mirror and was originally fitted to 356C cars and then early 911. I also in the late 60's had no mirrors fitted to my 59 A. I bought a "Durant" in favour to the original "Aero" style because I prefered the style.

It took me along time to get the position correct on the door before drilling and all mirrors except for the racing style spyder one look best on the door not the wing.

41 years on and my original upholstered backs to my front seats have sunk somewhat so that now I have to raise myself in the seat to get a good view out of the mirror

I think the "Aero" probably gives you more of a chance to get the correct rear view. The Durant mirrors or copies of? are still available.

By the way, the Aero fitted A and B cars ( upto T5) the B T6 had Ponto Stabil mirrors.
