CLM - Entry to paddocks

Reading the ACO site for the classic, it says a dress code is required for entry to the paddocks. Is this essential?

As long as you leave the wife beater vest and knotted hanky at home you'll probably be OK

I am normally pretty scruffy ... but for CLM I've always worn a short sleeved shirt for the paddocks. I think as long as you don't look like you've just stepped off the beach the guys on the gates for each paddock tend to be fine
