Backdate or fakedate? (SC/Rep)

Am I too cynical (and with not enough knowledge of the body shell changes to be able to tell from the pics) but is this simply an SC with backdated front/rear and some 'creative' changes to the identity to mask the age?

It is respresented as a 1972 with an SC motor upgrade and RS rep body mods (front bumper looks like it is a hack job though) He is a dealer so I can't see why you would run the risk?

Or is it an 80's 'modernisation' of a 72 car that was bought cheap and cheaply put back to a long hood with some fibreglass bumpers/duck etc... I just can't help thinking that the sunroof and interior mean SC shell/car.

There was a similar car for sale in the wiltshire area last year (which was guards) which I was certain was an SC backdated with also the chassis/identity of a 1972 car.

The pictures of the interior show it to have a full SC interior and dials. Ask for a picture of the battery location, that's the easiest way to differentiate between a 72 and an SC

well, in addition to the later runing gear

it's got a post '73 later dash

a post '73 later stearing wheel

post '73 later gauges

post '73 later seats

its got a post Feb? '73 rear slam panel

wonderful pannel fit for the bonnet

can't tell wether the rear arches are SC

everything points to it being a later shell with an early chassis number ..... but doesn't mean it is. Inspection would be required. Mind you, if it is rot free it's not a bad price

It was the bonnet fitment, interior and sunrof that stood out for me.

I have nothing against backdates, in fact given the difference between the price of an early car and my bank balance ; ) an SC needing body work and then take the opportunity to backdate is exactly what I am looking for.

I wouldn't be swapping chassis no's though!

I'll see if pics of the battery location are forthcoming.

IIRC this was on ebay a few weeks ago in Scotland.

It was advertised along the lines of being a 1972 model "rebodied" into an SC shell with 3 litre motor

You should check if the 72 oil flap has been welded up (on the inside) to see if the rear wing is original.
If rebodied there won't be any evidence of welding (there ).

So if I buy an early wreck/VIN plate and fix it to my 87 backdated car I could say I've re-shelled it.

I'd quite like not to have to pay road tax, and I'd quite like to have less stringent conditions on the MOT. Above all when people ask how old mine is I'd like to give a simple answer without having to launch into the old backdate explanation while they start yawning.

However I'm not sure I'd feel good about then selling it as an early car.

I'd forgotten about the oil flap.

I don't think more pic's are to be forthcoming.

I won't be pursuing it further and hope this thread serves as a warning to others.

However, it sold on ebay for about £9.5K - bid him a bit more and it could be a good bargain.

This car sold from down south about a year ago when it was on Pistonheads c£7500, then sold recently on ebay for c£10k. I spoke to the previous owner when it was for sale and the second owner, it is obviously an early SC with the chassis plate from the original donor car and this has been accepted by the DVLA. At least the door handles look authentic! It is a tax-free SC..well done that man!
