2.4T Sporto - but see how it turns out.....

Post by Nick Moss »

This little 2.4T Sporto was the subject of much discussion on the Early 911S registry BBS back in December 2006. It was advertised as a 1972 model, the VIN is 911 210 0011, but where is the external oil filler? The build sticker stated that is was built in March 1972, so how could it be a 1972 model? The original colour was Fraise

Comment on that BBS included
seems strange to me. I wouldn't trust it until I'd seen a Porsche Certificate.
How could March production be a 72 model? Model year is from September until mid august. This should be a 71 model according to production date. There must be something strange with either the production date or the VIN?
Was the front clip swapped for a later car, as part of a collision repair?
MARCH '71--I'm not buying it
Well, I did buy it, and it arrived here in the UK in May 2007

I asked a friend to ask the factory if there was anything special about the car
as far as I could find out there was nothing too special about this car. Yes, the colour was fraise. It was an original US car without any interesting options and there are no hints that the car originally did not have the oil filler on the right rear wing
It turns out to be a rather special car (for us anoraks):

The build number is 0001, the VIN is 0011, the engine number is 0021, a nice symmetry IMO. The shell turned out to be a 1971 shell:

The parcel shelf is the 71 style with the thin longitudinal ribbing.
The rear damper cross member is the 71 style with the horizontal flange (the 72 has a vertical flange)
The right rear inner wing is the 71 style and has no holes for the 72 oil fittings etc.
The rear chassis rails are the 71 style, not the 72/73 style, they have the tube on the right side of the engine bay for the hot air supply to the air cleaner and flat faces where the a/r bar mounts are.
The rear seat pans are the 72/3 style for the wider 915 gearbox.

The shell was shipped up to Custom Cages at Daventry to have a full FIA spec historic cage fitted. The results were up to their usual high standards:

Nick the Chisel fitted the strut brace brackets and mounts for the 110 L fuel tank. He also seam welded the shell for extra strength

Looking good Nick.
You don't happen to have a photo of the mounts for the 110 L fuel tank and how there fitted.

Dougie, I don't seem to have any pictures of my own mounting, but they were based on these:

There are square depressions on each inner wing where you mount these brackets

The final part of the body construction was the ST arches, steel at the rear, GRP wings at the front

The rear suspension and wheel/tyre need to be fitted to ensure the correct placement of the arch and sufficient clearance.

When fitting those steel arches, is the joint a Butt or a small overlap or is the edge of the wing swaged to allow a flush fit on the outside? :?:

Sadly no, but a fabricator should be able to knock them up in a few minutes.
whats it going to be used for ?
You will have to wait and see....

The edge of the quarter is joggled to create an overlap of about 6 mm. The finished weld is leaded, then filled.
