New 356 owner

Post by James Self »

Hi...
After 20 years of being into vdubs and following a trip to The Classic in LA last year and seeing Greg Banfill's Pre-A slammed and on chrome early fuchs, I decided to sell my '58 beetle 'vert and buy a 356A.

I put a wanted ad on the 356 Registry and had plenty of responses but seemed to lose out on a few deals to our european friends with their strong Euro's. Finally ended up buying a '58 Super from a guy just outside New York, which was originally Meissen Blue. It was hard decision to make seeing I was buying it purely from photographs and the owners description but once it turned up it was as described and I was happy with what I'd bought. The car finally turned up on christmas eve... Welding wise it needs the panel under the fuel tank and I shall replace the whole floor as it has been patched badly, Also the battery floor has been badly repaired so that will be replaced but apart from that it is very solid and complete.

Plan is for a full show quality resto but it will be running chrome 4.5 and deep 6 fuchs and slammed suspension on air shocks.
This is from when it turned up on christmas eve...

The brakes have all been gone through and I have fitted beetle dropped spindles with discs up front to fit the fuchs. Bumpers and lights are all on now.

This is a photoshopped mock up of how I want the car to end up looking like, always good to have a vision of where you want to get to..

And this is what I had to sell to get the 356... 8) More updates soon....

:P like the sound of that. (and it's just the sort of mad thing i'd like to do) think i'd have to find another 356 though, otherwise Andy prill might get upset. his but blood sweat and tears into getting my car just right.

James, if your old cabrio was anything to go off then your 356 certainly will be one to look out for. I look forward to following your resto!
I'm the guy who picked up you Karmann Ghia (my mate John bought it), something else you sold to make space for your porker.

James,

Look forward to seeing how you get on with the "A" Looks a straight car to me from the photo's A question will you return it to Meissen Blue?

Best of luck with ongoing work.
