Just a quick update: As we wait for more specialist parts to arrive, been doing the boring and not very photogenic bits like re-wiring the instruments,
rear lights and under dash, that's now all done and ready for the Cibie Biodes to be fitted when the bulbs and relays arrive.

Under bonnet looking good now the twin brake reservoirs are in, the re-manufactured fuel tank strap attached and the original RSR fuel sender unit in and working to give me a low fuel warning light.
The sender wire will sit in the grove when it's finished, honest!

Have the fan housing and chain box covers been chromated?

Hi Dougie, yes the finish on the fan housing and chain box covers is Chromate but to an heavy industrial strength so they go black.
Neil's chromate tank gives a great dark grey finish but to get the proper RSR black the parts went to the people who do Westland
helicopter gearboxes and Challenger tank magnesium parts.

I did not know Neil had a chromate tank, that is very sweet. You guys make a great team.

This is a beautiful car, just magnificent. Gib's a no-nonsense guy, but I think there may be some emotion if/when he sees it as a done deal in Italy.

I'd had never been happy with the Martini paintwork on the bonnet, it had been done quickly to get it ready for Silverstone 2 years
ago and we used as a guide, part of this plan that was floating round the internet:

To my mind comparing it with period pictures it was to square and boxy, the lines were to straight and the spacing was wrong.
Here's a couple of examples which when you look at the original car and then mine at Silverstone, you see how the overall effect of
the original was much more curvaceous and shapely.

(Just an excuse to use that picture of Barry again really!)

At the same time I wanted to put in a 'werks' style fuel filler flap which is a very basic aluminum flap on a hinge which sits proud on
top of the hole in the bonnet. Here's a great picture albeit of a different car, again showing the curves of the stripes and on this
particular bonnet two flaps, 935 style, for fuel and oil.

I'd recently found a fantastic paint shop who specialise in custom paint jobs on bikes but also do great work on helmets, snowboards
and the like. They had been doing some detail paint work on small bit's and pieces for me and when I mentioned the bonnet they
said they would try it but this time we should work just from the period pictures. Here's Stuart planning out the design.

you can see already from the lines he's laying out how much more accurate it looks.. there is definetly more of a sweep to the outside and a smoother curve at the front corners. i think its most obvious when looking at the left side (as we're looking at it) of the bonnnet in this picture..

car looks fantastic, and those wheels look well 'ard!.. :naka:

So here it is after a first quick lacquer coat to see what it looks like. It will be flatted again and we have to tweek the white and fit up
the flap, but I'm really pleased. It's now got the sweeping curves that I was trying for and Stuart has marked out the graduation of
the lines to perfection by measurement and eye. The painting of the Martini and Porsche scripts make it really special, Stuart being
particularly pleased with the way the ends of the Porsche word meet the stripes, fantastic.

The wide angle distorts it a bit here, but just love the picture!

I'll post when it's finished and the flap is on.

Nice job.

How are you going with the roof?

I see 107 has no roof stripes but duck stripes, that picture of 40 has roof stripes following the bonnet stripes and the 8 car in the museum is completely different on the bonnet and the duck with no roof stripes. I see your has roof stripes following the scuttle stripes.

Hi Mike thanks for acknowledging the post, and here are a couple of pictures of the car as it was being repainted after you saw it
at Silverstone. Now with no stripe on the roof, but retains the scuttle stripes front and rear.

The thing to remember about 107 as it raced in the 73 Targa was that it was the spare 'T' car wearing the bonnet from the team car
which had crashed the day before, hence the unusual mismatch of stripes on the front.

and for those who have not seen this picture before, here's why the team car didn't race.......
