Revving to high, tyre Help!

I am currently running 195x50 on my 356, great handling but it is throwing the speedo out by about 10mph and the engine is obviously working harder and is revving higher to maintain that speed, which at motorway speeds is noisier than it has to be.

I have been recommended to get 185x70 Pirellis or Avons.

As the wheels have spacers fitted with the larger tyres will i have to re adjust these or will it be just a straight swap?

What do you guys think, will this solve my problem and can anybody recommend a good supplier I am based in Wilts

Ive got these on mine ...profile 70

With the spacers it should be a straight swap OR ...dump the spacers

You could also go to 16s and similar profile tyre

I know I worked this out for 15s on the 911 vs 16s . With the same profile a 16 gives less than 10% more circumference.

Last resort would be to pull the G box and go for a long 4th .

I would suggest 195/65's as they come up at around the same dia as 185/70's and are relatively easy to get hold of , I bought some Continentals that did not look too over the top modern and had a decent radius on the shoulder , 356's need a tyre with a more rounded shoulder they work better with the swing axle rear suspension , Bill.

Manage after lots of searching to get 185/70VR15 Pirelli CN36 tyres from

I ended up paying £98 +vat which I thought was very cheap, I think they have got a special offer on at the moment.

Anyway, now fitted on the car and first off it looks much better, secondly the speedo is reading the correct speed and it is not revving as high on motorways so makes cruising a little more comfortable.

Andy Prill re built my gearbox with 1st 2nd and 3rd gears quite close for great B road driving with a long 4th for motorways etc,

I was a little dissapointed with this set up to begin with but now I have changed the tyres it has transformed the car.

glad to hear you are sorted , could you stick up a pic of the installed tyres , I have heard good things about those Avons but have not had the money to try them out , and the sixty series tyres did look a bit kit car to me on an otherwise lovely thing. Bill.

No problem, will take some pics tom, the car is filthy though, but will give you a good idea of the tyre and how it sits.

It is running very tight on the rear wheel arches, but dosnt rub, there is probably 3mm clearance if that.

There are spacers but then I have the problem of the nuts not fitting, so I have left the spacers on and will keep an eye on the tyres for any signs of rubbing, I think the car looks better with the wider stance the spacers give it, plus it handles better.

Here a few quick pics taken on my iphone, so apologies for the quality.

Rear tyres have a clearance of around 2 mm just enough.
