Worthwhile?

Post by jb »

I have just fitted Locaris. They were such a pain to fit that I was in two minds as to whether it was worth the effort.
However I was in the wilds of Oxfordshire yesterday which proved to be a bit muddy. I did not realize how muddy until I looked at the state of the arch guards. If it wasn't for them all that stuff would be wrapped around the innards of my car. I still have air conditioning fitted so there are lots of nooks in which the mud could collect.

Wheelarch liners are wonderful - imagine how much better the longevity of early Porsches would have been if they had been fitted from new.

Just a question how tight to the original arch do they fit? I only ask as to me it seems like potential for a water/dirt trap between the original inner arch and the new plastic one? Therefore rusting uder the plastic without you knowing?

I dont know too much about these at all, but i would agree the idea seems very much like a good moisture trap to me.

They are not a moisture trap. Think of them as alluminium mudguards that go inside the wheelarch/wing to stop mud etc being flung into the nooks and crannies from the wheels but still allow airflow over them inside the wing. You are thinking they are like modern wheelarch liners which cover all access to all the wheelarch/wing and could be seen as a moisture trap.

My car has them too and they work a treat.

Wouldn't be without them :)

Unfortunately the mud that was rammed up in my arches had already done the damage in the 30 years they were not fitted :)

Now however it is bone dry and clean up there, so hopefully the onset of the inevitable should be delayed this time around.

These are fantastic: they may look crude (because they are), but if fitted carefully, they keep ALL of the crud out.

When you fit them, you make sure that the leading edge (which have forward-pointing returns on them) drops down a little, into the airflow. This means that when you drive, you are forcing airflow into the arch area. Funnily enough, this doesn't seem to blast water up there, but does keep it all dry.

As for them causing rust, the only points where this could happen really is where the (aluminium) angle brackets are drilled and screwed into the wheel arches. I've fitted a couple of sets of these now, and simply bed the whole affiar down on either big dollops of grease, or cavity wax. Since the first must have been done a good five or six years ago now without problems, I reckon they've done far, far more good than harm.

BTW, Jason are they still in aluminium, and if so, are they now painting them black (or anodising them)?

Either way, they look very smart in the black 8) .

Barry - I just sprayed them with matt black paint so they were not so obvious.

How much did they cost?

I see there is a silver metal frame around the arch where they are screwed onto the car, does this notice around the arch from the outside?

thanks

When the C3 is done, (tomorrow MOT hopefully) I'll be fitting them as well. Having had a Larry moment whereby I cleaned for hours and hours the 930, I figured I do not want to repeat that all too often!

Where do we get them from please?
