Rolex= instantly recognisable, incredibly common these days so much so that even the shoe shine man knows the differences between the calibres better than your average Goldsmiths sale person.

I rarely see a porsche man wearing a Breguet, for example.

Just out of curiosity, can anyone here tell me why the buying of heuer by Tag (1986?) seems to be shrouded in so much mystery?
Even on the TagHeuer website, the history page details almost every watch and sporting event associated with the brand but makes absolutely no reference to the buyout. Why is this?

TAG Heuer was formed in 1985 when TAG (Techniques d'Avant Garde), manufacturers of high-tech items such as ceramic turbochargers for Formula One cars, acquired Heuer.

On September 13, 1999 TAG Heuer accepted a bid from LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton S.A. of SwFr1.15 billion (£452.15 million) (US$739 million) contingent upon a transfer of 50.1% of stocks.

seems tag heuer are now owned by LVMH?!..

Guys I've been offered a brand new old stock Heuer Carrera 1964 re-edition. This was the watch launched when Tag and Heuer became Tag Heuer and was a 'classics' range. It is VERY close to the original watch and features the 861 movement of the speedmasters if I remember rightly. Its a 1998 watch so first run and was found in a jewellers in the Netherlands. It has no box and papers although jeweller is looking for them (work on the basis he wont find them and it will be a bonus if he does).

Been offered to me at 1350 euros. The guy is in UK next week so can be posted from in UK I think or collected from Coventry.

Happy to get it for someone if they want it? I was going to but just bought a vintage Heuer Carrera and at 39mm I'd probably want something bigger for me.

out of interest, it seems to me there's a fashion for large watches. Is there a wrist size/watch size correlation or is it just watch bling' as in bigger is better?

For me, I've always loved the omega's because they've never appeared too large to me. Maybe it's just because I've got skinny wrists (about the only part of me that is as it happens)

Size of watch and wrist size is all a personal thing.

I have quite thick wrists so can get away with the Pam's and bigger watches. Once you get below 40mm though they start to look a little small imho (in everyone elses I'm sure nobody even notices!!!)

Like my new Heuer Carrera though....prob smallest i have but had it on all week

You dont until you open the back but the guy selling is a respected rolex guy with references. I wouldn't worry...I'll refund you myself if its not!

Oh and I'm wrong about the movement...that was the original that had the 321.

From Neils site:

Three things that make this watch a collectors classic is that the Logo says "Heuer" which were re-issued for about 9 months, it was then changed to "Tag Heuer". Heuer is undoubtedly a better name on the dial. It also has the manual winding Lemania 1873 movement rather than the automatic Valjoux. The Lemania is rarer, more desirable and collectable. It also has an acrylic crystal opposed to sapphire – just like the 1964 original. Dimensions are: width is 35 mm excluding crown and 38 mm including crown, lug to lug is 44 mm, Thickness is 13 mm.
