Chassis No.
9112300725
Estimate:
£45,000-£60,000
AUCTION DATE:
To be auctioned on
Wednesday, October 28, 2009
OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE
2.9 litre horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine, RSR specification five-speed transmission, four-wheel independent suspension, upgraded braking system. Wheelbase: 89.4"

This Porsche 911 2.4S comes from an extensive UK-based collection that comprises everything from 1950s sports racers to modern supercars. It was purchased in 2002 by the current owner as a standard 2.4S, which is arguably one of Porsche’s best vintage 911s, in its most desirable specification. First registered on 28th February, 1972, this 911 has well-documented history. It has an old, detailed German logbook of a previous owner, Hubert Sedlmaier, who noted every journey in his ownership, the date it was made, fuel used and the kilometres traveled.

When the current owner purchased the car he sent it directly to Autofarm, who overhauled the car to be in perfect order. However, as an enthusiast of high performance cars, he wanted to use his Porsche on track days and decided to upgrade the standard specification of the car. As a purist, however, he embarked on this project with no regard for expense, using some of the best engine builders in the classic Porsche circles.

First and foremost, the engine was upgraded from the standard 2.4 litre configuration (with an output of 190 bhp) to 2.9 litre configuration, giving the car an output of 265 bhp in its current tune. It should be noted, however, that the engine has recently been detuned to make it more usable on the road and is capable of producing more power if required. Next, the gearbox was rebuilt to RSR specification, using RSR first and second gears. To give the car a more aggressive look, save weight and allow for a large oil cooling system to be mounted in the front of the car, the front and rear bumpers were also replaced with lightweight 2.7 RS units, while the rear of the car received the emblematic duck-tail RS rear engine cover.

The standard wheels have been replaced with 15-inch Fuchs wheels – six inches wide in front and seven in back – which give the car better road holding but also put more rubber on the road to cope with the extra power. Given the upgraded performance, the braking system also needed attention and was therefore completely revised with blue ceramic pads as well as forced air cooling via purpose-made cowls, vents and ducting. Larger anti-roll bars were fitted to give the car more stability and less body roll.

For improved safety and structural rigidity, a full roll cage was installed as well as a front cross strut brace and crash box structure in the bonnet area. As for the interior, the original seats were replaced with sportier Corbeau seats and harnesses. The original Recaro seats are included with the car, should the new owner wish to reinstall them.

Bob Watson Engineering carried out all of the work to this car, which has also just been serviced at a cost of over £3,500 to include the overhaul of the injection system and full set-up on the rolling road.

The vendor further confirms that the car “runs beautifully” and is ready to be enjoyed on the track or simply as a very fast continental tourer, as it is also fitted with a long-range RSR specification fuel tank, an auxiliary ventilation system for the cabin and a fire extinguisher system in both the cabin and the engine bay. This “Café Racer” Porsche 2.4S is sure to give its new owner great satisfaction. The extra performance of the car combined with the unaltered classic 1970s look give this 2.4S the best of both worlds.

The usual auction writer's rubbish: "combined with the unaltered classic 1970s look", apart from the bumpers, arches and ducktail! The rims are 7s and 8s , not 6s and 7s as described. Nice car for the money though.

And at least you know what you're getting with this (unlike some recent auction RS  :) )

I agree, looks very nice and is some big bangs for your bucks, to boot. 8)

its a fab looking car, i love it!.. ..I can't help thinking its a bit of a shame to have used that base car for this project though? It had so much history and love from the previous owner; if I was the guy who owns it now, and he truly has THAT much money, I think I would have kept the car as-is and brought another with less history/non-correct numbers to turn into a 2.9-RS-R-alike..

Its really interesting this as you now have this car for sale,

The ST clone at Sean Lockyears for 70k http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/924256.htm

and Chris Harris's old car at a bit more:
http://francistuthill.co.uk/news_more.a ... =87&page=1

All very nice cars and all top prices though. I wonder if the market is still there at these prices for these non originals at the moment, however well they were done and however much was spent on them?

Guess we will soon see....

Yes ....and its come down in price to the current price.

I just don't see theres as much money sloshing around for these non original chassis/engine/body cars that there once was. Hope there is though as I've a rather nice one in the garage :)

I assume that Chris Harris' car has been done to death on here, but I am not sure what to make of it. Cost 150k nowadays (whatever that means) to do it, for sale at "closer to half that", which I guess is in the late 80s.

I am not sure what drives the value, would anyone here but it at that price or is it a case of the cost of building it far outweighs what anyone is prepared to buy it for?

Just realised that was probably for the car at the top- the subject of the thread!

At that sale price I wouldn't be surprised if the green car turns up at Sean's or one of our other dealer friends

I like to think it's gone to a loving home though! :)
