What spares should I be keeping in the car?

My 356 went through the MOT last week! Result. I'm itching to take it for a spin but have to wait for the right customs forms to come thru and then get it DVLA registered....

So I'm in the unusual position [for me!] of having some time to plan ahead before I jump in... so what should I be checking - I'm a complete 356 novice - and what spares or car-specific tools should I be gathering together? I'm going to do the obvious and change the oil, do points/plugs/tappets, tune the radio, etc, but what will I be overlooking! Any tips appreciated.

Get yourself if you havn't already got one a 356B drivers manual. This will show you a lubrication chart and where all the grease points are. Also when you should change oils etc. These books also show basic instruction on setting the point, adjusting the carbs and the brakes etc.

Of course the Factory large workshop repair manuals or the "Elfrink" book really go into much more detail and are great if you intend to try do everything yourself.

You need books, don't work on the car without them. All the books can be bought. Probably some over here and many from the USA. (Charlie White or Bill Block on the American "registry" site are vendors that are fully detailed there.)The forum here will also give you good instruction if you need it on areas yopu are not sure about.

Get yourself one of the Hazet sparkplug tools from Paul at PRS - great tool - makes changing the plugs very easy -

PRS Mikes list is very good -

Sods law- the more spares / parts you carry the less you'll need!

I thought that was the point of having the spares, not that I'm superstitious about these things!
