as i said i really don't understand the legal requirements but from what i can understand DDK has got to the sort of size where we as a club really should think about insurence cover for any sort of meet in a public place.
i am thinking especially of fairly large gathering like DDK coast to coast....yes we all have our own car insurence BUT is this anough?
Pub meets where we can have 10-20 cars all parked up togeather in a public car park.
from my thinking then if we only need insurence because we are using a gazebo, flag or banners then the best option is for us NOT to use said gazebo, flag or banners as IMHO £50-£60 per event for a handful of us is just a complete waste of money and makes the event far too expensive to do..
i know for one that if i am going to have to add approx £10 onto the entrance fee of an events entrance fee then i am proberly not going to do the event.

As far as I am aware the insurance that comes with federation membership will cover all of our activities (no doubt with certain exclusions) whereas a lot of the other offerings only cover specific activities such as an auto jumble or show. IMO a 50p hike in membership to ensure that club officials can have a good sleep every night sounds good value to me.

The Coast 2 Coast .... we need to be pretty clear with this one due to potential liabilities.... the way I see it is :Helen wrote: i am thinking especially of fairly large gathering like DDK coast to coast....yes we all have our own car insurence BUT is this anough?

someone has suggested a meet at 2 different hotels / restaurants.... some people have booked rooms individually at the hotels ..... people are planning their own route between the 2 hotels .... some people are travelling to the coast on the Sunday.
This is not an officially organised DDK event. There is NO official DDK planned route. It is a group of like minded friends meeting up for drinks & food.

Indeed, plus I will have copies of an ideminity form for signature for all attendees - as stated in the DDK Constitution.hot66 wrote:The Coast 2 Coast .... we need to be pretty clear with this one due to potential liabilities.... the way I see it is :Helen wrote: i am thinking especially of fairly large gathering like DDK coast to coast....yes we all have our own car insurence BUT is this anough?

"Unless otherwise arranged and notified, the DDK and its representatives cannot be held responsible for any damage, loss or injury incurred by a member attending or competing in any event organised by the DDK. Members competing in Club events must sign a standard form of indemnity excluding DDK and its Officers from all blame. Such a form is usually available from the event organisers, or their own insurers."

My wife ( who's a lawyer ) has always said the same thing.veryporky wrote:Probably not worth the paper it's written on IMO. Statute law always takes precedent over law of contract. Statute law says you cannot contract out of liability for death or injury, which when you think about it is only fair.
Luckily DDK have not organised any such event anyway so it's not an issue. Anyone fancy a stroll on St Bees Beach one Saturday morning in September ? Would be nice to have some friends join me

I think the real issue is the PIL when we're in attendance at public events.

i agree with this . i'm posting the infomation on to Bootsy, this does seem to be the most cost effective way all around.veryporky wrote:As far as I am aware the insurance that comes with federation membership will cover all of our activities (no doubt with certain exclusions) whereas a lot of the other offerings only cover specific activities such as an auto jumble or show. Forgive me if I'm wrong but I think the cover that comes with being a member of the federation is a blanket cover that includes public shows and events like coast to coast and all other normal activities. I guess if we organised a UK style Targa Florio around the yorkshire dales there might be an exclusion!
With an event like the coast to coast it may well be that members sort their own routes etc but in a worst case scenario the judge may well construe that the fact that it was arranged over the DDK website is sufficient to prove that it was organised by the club. The fact that we even sometimes refer to ourselves as a club maybe sufficient to hang us.

The only difficult issue is that not all forum users are members and they will therefore be excluded from attending! However, most attendees of the events are members I suppose.Helen wrote:i agree with this . i'm posting the infomation on to Bootsy, this does seem to be the most cost effective way all around.veryporky wrote:As far as I am aware the insurance that comes with federation membership will cover all of our activities (no doubt with certain exclusions) whereas a lot of the other offerings only cover specific activities such as an auto jumble or show. The actual figure of paid up member's following September Subs is actually very low!

no names of members are given. so i suggest just upping the actual membership figures a little to say 300 (approx £157) and that should more than cover numbers at any event or gathering.Bootsy wrote:The only difficult issue is that not all forum users are members and they will therefore be excluded from attending! this has always been a grey area ....potential liability if the unthinkable was to happen and a club members car was involved in an incident whilst driving with another couple of club members .... I've often wondered what the right way of going about these things is ?veryporky wrote: With an event like the coast to coast it may well be that members sort their own routes etc but in a worst case scenario the judge may well construe that the fact that it was arranged over the DDK website is sufficient to prove that it was organised by the club. The problem is, we'd all sit at home doing nothing & know one would organise a meet down the pub etc if the rule makers had their way.

Membership could be made a condition of attending club events which would be an incentive to pay one's dues. Which reminds me I must have missed my renewal somewhere along the line. Let me have the sum and payee/address and I'll add 50p to it to cover the liability by way of a cheque.Helen wrote:no names of members are given. so i suggest just upping the actual membership figures a little to say 300 (approx £157) and that should more than cover numbers at any event or gathering.Bootsy wrote:The only difficult issue is that not all forum users are members and they will therefore be excluded from attending!
