Rear calipers - Exchange units don't fit.

Ok, the refurb'd calipers might look great, but they don't fit.
The Caliper body fouls on the disk.

so that I can't get the 2nd bolt in.

as you can see on this picture, there's an offset so the disk doesn't sit in the middle.

Are the rears different, on the early SC's ? The rear suspension arms are the Ali ones, with the later type roll bar hook up (Drop links bolt onto the arms) Should the disk run in the centre of the caliper ?

Why not return them from wence they came ?

Did you fit the later hubs when you changed to the alloy arms? The early hubs for the steel arms will give the wrong offset.

Absolutely, I just want to be sure of the differences to avoid getting the wrong ones again

Yes, these arms and hubs are a set.

I had exactly the same problem. Thought I must be missing something and spaced the calipers so the disk sits centrally.

It never occured to me that the calipers I got back may be exchange units... surely not. I`ll find out this morning.

One thing for sure though, when I bolted them in place the inside piston was pulled right against the disk.

On some cars the rear brakes were spaced out by the brake shield. If this is missing the caliper will pull up tight to the disc.

Yeap, that's a front 3 inch ear caliper for vented discs.

These are rears. The metal hard line connects from the end (front brakes it is the middle) and the pistons are much smaller.

I wander If I'm tring to fit a front caliper on the back !!
I need to check the other calipers. Its been such a long time since I took this lot apart !! 2 Years almost exactly !!
But I thought the front I took off had a larger pad and not the small square one... Bearing in mind that this car is a Bitza !! (would be '77/78 ish)
Time to take another look

Here's what I've got and yes, sure enough the old rear pads fit what I thought were the front calipers.

But the old front pads don't fit the new front calipers !!
So in fact it still looks like I have the wrong calipers, but fronts now, not rears !! yes ?

Classicar Automotive assured me they didn`t exchange calipers in for refurb. As he put it, `where would we find any of those to swop them?`

As you say Alan, it must be the brake shields that did the spacing but as mine are missing and they are NLA, I may never know.

Anybody got a set of breakshields they don`t need?
