If your car is radium green it will look fantastic whitewalled tyres and all!!!!
That colour is really something else! John Lucas I met years ago when I used to belong to PCGB. I presume??? its the same guy who raced a bit with Eric Studer and Edgar Valentine. I didn't know he's gone seemed a very nice guy.

Car prices I guess are a little relative to the time you paid. But when you see 356 Carerra prices now there is no relation to anything!!!

Below some pictures as promised of my brothers car shown above in Hendriks photo and some of our 172MY 1952 car complete with chrome Ford front bumper! The inside view doesn't look that good but actually was easlily restored

I should have put easily restorable instead of restored because in 1975 when those pics were taken of the the red 356 we didn't restore it but should have done!! It was RHD and all!! Oohhh sorry.

The green car with the lovely wooden door cappings just like my brothers is as I thought it would be just fantastic. For sure thats a lovely car!!!

I don't know but I couldn't open the picture in the second mail you sent. I can see the URL but thats all. Maybe I have to type that out to see it?

By the way my brother sold on e-bay a few months ago the exact same Porsche radio blanking plate as can be seen in the photoof the green one. He had one for years even possibly from the 52 we had ( you can see its missing in the above photo ) As he said to me, he was never likely to use it . I still have a the 356 handbrake assembly and the door plate with reutter badge from the 52 car and small rear glass to remind me of my mistake in breaking it!! However as I mentioned elsewhere, the original excellent early syncro box from the 52 car worked well in the 51 although we had to modify some sheetmetal to get it in.

Roy, I found that photo on the internet a few years ago. I think it was at an auction in London. I was just suprised to see a RHD split window.
Tell me are the cars original UK cars or were they imported?

Hi Hendrik,

Yes, you are correct, the 1951 split screen was sold at an Auction in about 76. I think it was an Earles Court London auction. ( I must ask my brother)

The 51 car was originally LHD imported from memory into Ireland. The 52 was genuine RHD. My brother knows as he had copies of the log books.

The Australian Car was originally RHD . Its probably the first or one of the first RHD porsches
It was one of a batch of 3 purchased by an engineering mgr while on a business trip to Austria in 51 to look for high capacity waterpumps for the Snowy river scheme. There was also a fish silver Cab and another coupe in maroon. His name was Norman Hamilton .
He believed there would be demand for such a car in Australia and also looked to import 2 other german manufacturers Borgward and VW. However in post war English colony there were severe tariffs for importing non English cars and this made importing in large numbers prohibitive.
Hamiltons subsequently became the Australian Porsche Concessionaire ie rep in Aus to setup dealer franchises.

hi hig,

1). That picture of the RHD 51 split screen and the RHD continental is great. There has been recently correspondence on forums about the script "Continental" only going on 356 ( pre-a )cars delivered into the USA. This RHD drive car seems to buck that trend. It could have been been put on after delivery? Is this photo from Australia? Hig are you from there also? ( Irish over seas)?

I bet you right about the first RHD they couldn't have made many in 51 as I informed above my brothers was converted to RHD. I also got it wrong about the colour when he sold the car in 76. It was re-sprayed silver before he sold it. Previously he had metalic light blue. I omitted to say his 51 had a sunshine roof which the frame looked original to me. In the mid 60's the previous owner found it leaked so he had a panel made and inserted in the area.
My brother had this taken out and another sun roof put in ( not a "golde")

It was then he had it repainted silver.

Also it was our 52 car that was original RHD and imported into Ireland. (I incorrectly stated the 51 came into Ireland)

Now you can see how memory plays tricks. 34 years on and it gets hazy!
What I can say is with all the modifications on my brothers 51 car, just how was it Gregg's one is original to look at. I wonder if he had to correct a lot of items to get it so original?

I was living there in the 90s until 2004 ..Living in the UK now after a couple years in Ireland again

Where was it imported into Ireland ? ..who bought it? ...cant imagine there was too many porsches in Ireland so probably the first one there

This is all great stuff. I was told that a lot of the very early cars were brought to the UK via Ireland (probably to do with tax?).
As far as I know there were the three RHD '51 cars that were sent to Australia and then two imported here for the Earls Court show. Seems like they all still exist!
Higs, I remember seeing a photo of Norman Hamilton in one of the many 356 books standing next to his RHD cab with loads of badges all over it!

Well guys, my brother has the old log book for our RHD 52 356 and he gave me all the info on it:

1). The cars chassis number was 11789 and the engine number P30988

2). The engine was a 1500cc (and I see from records it would have been
built after August in 1952.)

3). The log book states it was originally registered in the republic of Ireland on the 13-3-54. ( No record of actually the importer on the UK logbook and did it just sit in a garage showroom for over 18 months before someone bought it??)

4). The car then was first registered into the UK on the 4-9-57 and a Mr F Whitehead of Rotherham was the first UK owner.

5). My brother actually took the number 172MY from this car when we decided to part it out and was lucky actually to transfer the number to his 1966 SWB 911 owned previously by Dick Lovett who certainly later sold Porsche cars.

We think its possible Hendrik that if the car stayed for some time in the Irish republic then it would not then as you say be subject to what was then Purchase Tax. I'm not sure of course but you can see it making sense.
Hig, maybe there were more than you thought going through this route!

History of a car is interesting though isn't it! I was especially pleased a few weeks ago to see my old "C" 53JGN ( now with a new number ) on these forum pages.

I look often through bike mags hoping to find my old 54 Norton Dominator PHP262 so far withou t success although from the DVLA site its still on there but has not been registered for about 25 years.

We found the 52 car in a barn near Radlett in Herts. The drive back to Sussex was traumatic for me. The wheel cylinders were mostly siezed and a rope went inside the car from one side to the other to keep the doors shut!! Nowday's you just wouldn't do that on the roads or only fools would but it was different then but I was still a fool!!!!!

are this looks familar and I have to say I am modeling my 54 on just the same as this one.. white walls, radium Green , and I even have the rear slatted screen for the rear window I got from Oz..

coming to a garage near me soon I hope.. Oh need to finish my 65 car and then I can get on with the 54 again!!! 9 years in the making is taking the pee abit really
