Hello

I bought a '68 LHD 912 from california in late 2007. it's very tired, but it only cost me £2,300 including shipping. I've had it in storage for a year and have now finally got round to attempting to get it running. I had a porsche specialist get it started and gave it a good go over to give me an idea of what needed doing to get it MOT-able. The mechanical work required didn't look to worrying however, the engine only runs on 3 cylinders with zero compression on the 4th. It appears that any kind of engine work on a 912, particularly replacing parts is very expensive business and out of my price range. However, i'm determined to do something with the car and I'm hoping I'll be able to get some tips and advice from this forum.

Regards, Mick

Welcome - hope the forum is useful for you.

Go for a hi-po Type 1 or type 4 VW engine - there's a couple of people on here who've gone the same route.

Hi Mick, welcome to DDK.

Bung a beetle engine in it to get you moving. Then seek a replacement (they are out there) or a Type4 VW engine.

I had a 67 912 with a 1600 Beetle engine in it on a single carb. Had the worst flat spot on it ever but was still fun.

welcome to DDK

if you are desperate to get it running, take the old motor out, put it to one side and fit a VW motor in it and gradually get round to fixing the Porsche engine (or sell it to me  )

enjoy the trip.

To be honest I had been thinking about a T1 VW engine, but was a bit worried about mentioning it on my first post. I envisaged it going down like an ex-girlfriend joke in a best man's speach. Now that I know that although not ideal and hardly purist, it is kind of acceptable to put a T1 VW engine into a 912. At least it'll allow me to rag it around. Next thing, how simple is the install? I pulled a few beetle engines 20 odd years ago and from memory that was simple.

What are the main obstacles that I'll have to overcome when fitting the engine?

What's the going price for a stock T1 1600 TP engine? Any tips on selecting one?

And, would my 912 engine running on 3 cylinders have any residual value?

you'll be needing at least 90bhp from a vw engine .... no stock type1's give this bhp.

So best bet would be a modified type1 .... at the very least a 1776cc twin carb'd

Before you rush out & spend £4k on a modded VW engine, why not strip down the 912 engine & find out if the problem is something relatively cheap ... it might be or it might not ;)

For future re-sale value I would keep the 912 engine with the car, wether it is working or not. A 912 will always be worth more if it has the original motor with it

Wot he said, wont cost you anything to open her open if you've got some basic tools, and at least you'll know what you've got to do :)

It could be something as simple as valve clearances too tight (or non-existent) on that cylinder ...
