356 Engine bits on Ebay!!/ building an engine

I havent an engine for my 356b coupe...
Looking around, they are rare and in various states of repair to buy, from the parts engine to the concourse worth-more-than-the-car-itself kind of engine.
But, there are loads of engine bits on ebay...
Would it be poss to build an engine using the bits I could buy on ebay? would it be cheaper to do it this way, and build it myself?
Where do I start?
How can I find a book etc to make sure I am always buying compatible parts, or are they coded in some way anyway?

Is it worth it, or shall I just get a modified Vw ??

I tinking building an engine from bits would be v.expensive, the sum of the parts does not always equal the completed price. I know of 2 engines for sale at the mo.

They are not B engines, both are later I think, which is a good place to start.

Get the bits from the states postal piece by piece and build it up that way. I've got some very cheap bits that no else bothered to bid for on ebay purely because the parts were too mundane for the yanks to bother with!!!

my thoughts too- seen a set of carbs + manifolds for 50 quid !! 3rd pice of the casing for the same- block for 80, camshaft 150.............
Id love to buy a 'barnfind' engine for about 5-600 quid............take it from there.....

mine was a 'barnfind' motor from a Speedster. It's taking a bit of a risk though, the thing hadn't turned over for 20+ years to the last owners knowledge so could have been scrap. however, everyone else had been too scared to take a chance which made it cheap!
as it happens, i changed the oil, rebuilt the carbs, fitted new plugs,leads and points and away she went! runs as sweet as a nut and gets driven really hard daily now :D

now all i need to do is find a super 90 in the same condition!
