Vintage racer update

Post by TheBaron »

It has been with Roger Bray over the last few wks or so, he has stripped the car, and it is with the sand blasting company.

The body work is far to gone to save and would be almost impossible to work around all the rust, so the only options is to do a total ground up renovation, I would have loved to have saved the old livery and paint but it just wasnt going to be a viable option.

I know it will cost me more than the car will actually be worth at the end to do this, but i will have a usable car that will be total renovated to my spec, all rust cut out new panels and then rust proofed, I am going to use this car everyday so it needs to be done right.

Andy Prill will be picking the engine up shortly to work his magic, I hoping to get around 130bhp out of it!

The car will be GT spec with, speedster seats, de bumpered, 911 fuch wheels, stone guards over lights. Slate grey with a wine leather interior and carpets.

Anyone got any additions or ideas.

Before the car was dismantled i tock lots of pics so i can replicate the graphics, i am in touch with a guy that can age the graphics to look 50yrs old, not sure if i will do this yet, i want to see what the car looks like without first, and as it will be an everyday car, i am thinking removable graphics for events etc.

I will post pics of bare metal shell once she is back at Rogers.

Regards

Stephen

sounds great 8)

Only thing I would do if it was me, would be to fit steel rims with no hub caps rather than fuchs ( but thats just a personal taste thing ) :)

Stephen,

I think we’ll need to support and encourage you through this.
It’ll be expensive (don’t ask me how I know). :?
You’ve got some top flight specialists working on your car there, I’m confident it’ll be superb at the end of the day.
The spec you’ve settled on sounds great.

I probably wouldn’t view the shell when it comes back from blasting, 'might be too distressing. My recollection of that car tells me there won’t be much good metal left.... :(

Exciting stuff. Interesting that they are sandblasting not dipping - I thought blasting risked wavy panels, not to mention sand in all yer orifices..?

I think the removable graphics is the way forward..what were the original colours?

Sounds great, interesting and terrifying all at once. I am hoping to do the GT thing bit by bit on my 61 B. How do Fuchs and drum brakes work? I also favour the steel rim look but perhaps this project will convert me. Good luck. Winston

The car is being plastic media blasted, they use low pressures and get great results,we have always used them,I heard more than one horror story about dipping now, problems with moisture in the seams and them rusting out etc.
I cut up a 1956 coupe that had been sandblasted at a ship specialist, who did work on barnacled trawlers!! is was so badly distorted, beyond repair!!

This should make a nice car,yes its got rust,Ive done far worse!,as for fuchs wheels,if you run "c" type discs the wheels will bolt on,you can just squeeze 6's under there if you dont have much suspension movement, see John Lucas's Racer for that!

Stephen, you are a brave man. I first saw this car when it was at the docks in Chatham awaiting collection by Export 56. I could see the front suspension pan, or what rust was left of it, hanging out of the bottom of the car without bending down  I was even more stunned when I saw the price that was being asked for it 2 years ago or so.

I suggest that you don't worry about paint colours, stickers or even what rims to fit at this very early stage. Wait till it gets blasted, and I use the same people as Roger so can atest to their expertise. Roger and Graham can then tell you exactly what is involved and even guess at the price to get the shell right. At that stage put a budget together with all your anticipated modifications, but be realistic with the costs involved in those modifications which can cost far more to achieve that leaving the car in the existing spec.

Good luck!

I am in middle of doing the same

Post by Riyadh356 »

Car sounds just up my alley, I am doing the same to a 58a, slate grey, wine red leather, matching carpetsand three point wine red seat belts with porsche logo from sierra madre. GT bumber trim, Steering wheel re-caste Ivory at Koch. Restored blaupunkt radio (with Ivory push buttons and knobs)It has 'c' brakes rebuilt and calipers ceramic painted red, new red Konis and lowered 1.5 inches negative camber on back to fit under arches, running on metallic silver/grey minillites (you can see the red calipers through them !!!). Probably convert to 12v as have a 160mph carrera speedo to go in it. And a bosch fog lamp.

Big bore kit, with an Elgin cam, re-built Zeniths and a 741 transmission. With a sebring straight though exhaust been advide it should push 130-145!! Work is being done as a private project by a guy who works for Rod Emory in the US. Hoping to get it back to the UK during Sept to Oct next year.

Well if you in it for the long haul welldone but I think Andy's motor will be more like 118bhp unless he is going to do more to it than he normally does. Still pleanty quick enough..

Where does the 'GT look' we all strive for come from? Was there a 356 GT offered by Porsche? or are we copying the Carreras? Sorry for the ignorance!!!! Winston

I know the graphics are a long way off and I don't know what you are thinking of, but hand painted is the way to go imho. Have a look at the Lippman Carrera Car at Andys and I'm sure you will agree.

Sounds like it's going to be a peach, steels for me all the way.

Winston, there were pushrod and carrera GT's. Dont know the full story, but the look is about leather hood straps, louvres on the engine cover, a funny little aerodynamic wing top mirror, stuff like that.

Some spiel here, there'll be loads more.

Now it all makes sense......I now need to find the inner deck lid structure and make some different bumper strips. Ali panels will have to wait! Thanks for that. Winston
