Door Lock Barrel

Silly question, sorry!

My car has at some time in it's life had the passenger side door (complete - I guess) changed. This gives me a door that I can lock from inside the car but my key doesn't work in it. How hard is it to change a lock barrel without a key for the lock? On my Elan you could only withdraw the lock barrel with the key in it.

I'm thinking it might be easier to change both handle assemblies complete with new lock barrels (I don't want a shiny new handle on one door and an 'aged' one on the other!!)

Hello Neil,

It is relatively easy to re-key the door lock. In quick terms, take the handle off, remove the barrel, put the key you want to use and then you will see which lock pins stand proud. They can be swapped round (or filed down) so when the key is inserted no lock pins stand out and thus the barrel turns. I do this all the time and once you have done one it does not take long.

Whilst there give a good clean and lubricate.

I have not had a 914 lock in parts so maybe someone else can chime in, but I suspect it is the same process.
