356c Project - How Much is Reasonable to pay?

Thanks RichiRich for taing the time to post those links, i had a good look at it and that has getting a better feel for things

I have about 20 pics of the project now. Here is some quick info first

1) Apprarently it has a factory fitted sunroof in the Coupe Top? Ive never
heard of it, but then again i dont know the 356 like you boys will

2) The engine has been rebuilt, but i dont know by who or who, and lets assume for now its a good engine. I'll make sure i hear it running when i go.

3) I have checked the chassis/engine numbers and they "match" the engine is 1600SC unit 811***, and the chassis starts 128*** (which is a reutters) built coupe

4) Apparently everything has been bought for the car, new rubbers, new chrome, etc, etc. I think everything except the interior. I think thats still orginal, so appraently its all there, just in boxes.

5) Ok now for the photos, please have a gander. Apologies if the site i set up is a bit clunky, please have a gander and then maybe some comments, lon condition or what i should offer.

A few things to notice from the photos.

There is a square hole in the dashboard top (this would be covered by the padding), I'm pretty sure that shouldn't be there and don't know why someone would make a hole there.

There is no tin ware around the engine.

The "sunroof" is almost definitely not factory fitted. The ones fitted by the factory were smaller and steel. I've heard about sunroofs of that size on early 356s, but certainly not on something this late.

The lack of photos of the underneath of the car is cause for concern as well. It looks like the paint has been flatted, a few minor repairs made ready for a re-paint.

However it seems you have the original engine still with the car. Remember to check the case casting numbers on the two halves of the main case AND the third piece (between distributor and generator stand) to make sure it is what the engine number on the third piece says it is. This especially important as you say the engine has been rebuilt at some point.

Please bear in mind I'm not trying to put you off it, just trying to be realistic. Good luck!

Just as a point of reference, this sunroof coupe is on ebay at the moment:

As you can see it refers to the drain holes, which yours should have as well. I'm not saying this a better or worse car, but just good for comparison.

The square hole is for the dash light that fits into the dash top cover allows for it to sit up inside and the wires to be connected

356ist, thanks for the comments and the link (that is a superb reference point), you make some good points!! I know your not trying to put me off, just making me aware of things so i pick the right 356 project, and get a good one!

That link on ebay makes the project about £6,300 plus shipping (and vat) hmmm that is quite a useful bench mark. Ive managed to squeeze out of the seller that he is looking for around £9000, but that would include a full respray, and new headlining, and sunroof, and a whole load of new parts alleady bought, plus some spares.

Im going to have a look next weekend, and read up as best i can on what to look for rust wise, etc in the mean time.

I stand corrected about the dashboard light thingy.
If it includes all those things I would let him do them first before you agree to buy, especially the paint. A bad paint job will look really bad if it's a dark colour and will only need to be redone.

Thats a great idea, i hadn't thought of that, especially as i would like it in black (the hardest colour to paint). See the photo at the bottom (of what im drooling over)!

Im keen to do buy, so what i could do is pay a deposit, then agree to pay a large chunk when the paint is done, and then the final chunk when the trim is done, but after i've inspected it all, so that if i need to knock some money off for a bad respray, etc i can do so. Good idea, thank you

I went to look at the car with thoughts of buying it about ten years ago, last time I saw it was roughly five years ago. Looks better now than it did then.

Just to say, thank you for all your help i bought it! Now a proud owner of a 356c project!

It had quite a lot of previous welding to it, but its otherwise solid, and well i wanted one, so its mine now!

Im going to try ang get it on the road for the spring, enjoy it for bit (maybe a few months, maybe a year or two), and then pull it off the road for a proper restoration, and sort that prevuious welding out! But for the moment, just really happy to have a 356 on the go (now just got to figure out how to collect it!)

good ideas! I'll start a thread so you can follow my progress, when i have it im my hands (hopefully a only a month! xmas at the latest (im waiting on some work to be done)). Im sure i'm going to have a million questions, as literally a box of bits, but i'l hang fire until then, so i dont jump ahead of myself.

Can't wait, so excited, literally something ive dreamed of since i was 16!
