Here's a nice bit of pressed steel.
Yep, that's a genuine, brand new Porsche bonnet.
Fits perfectly, no 'flats' anywhere, just superb.
Cost a fortune.
So.... you wouldn't cut a hole in it, would you?

One thing I was really fussy about was the aperture for the centre fill tank.
I told Nick I didn't want just a cut hole. I didn't want a bare edge, I didn't want an edging trim. What I'd asked for was a rolled edge with a radiused curve around the whole circumference.
Tricky, very tricky but an important detail for me.

They did brilliantly. Trust me it's perfect. Strong and even, correct all round. Deceptively simple. I haven't asked how many man hours it consumed.

One thing I was keen to have was an aluminium rear deck lid.
After struggling to buy one myself (including an amusing incident when an Italian dealer got somewhat enraged at Techno Classica Essen after we tried to verify the authenticity of his stock) it turned out that Nick had one in his stash of rare parts all along. Evidently he had it in mind for his own car and it took some effort to persuade him to part with it. Effort and money.
It needed a little work to get into good shape but now it is superb.
I can’t tell you how wonderful an ali lid is. You need to pick one up to believe it.
A normal steel lid doesn’t weigh much anyway but the aluminium version is like lifting paper.
They’re incredibly light. Hardly any weight. I love it. Lots.
And yet... once it’s fitted you can’t really tell. Crazy.

I did tell Nick I wanted caps over all three outlets so I could get on Castle Combe but he didn't think it would work.
