the new guy - anyone for a brew!

Post by rstytub »

hey you guys!

ok, here's the inside scoop. after years of waiting, I decided to go for it and bought my first 356. First of many I hope. It's just arrived and i'm well pleased! 1961 356B T5 Super Coupe.

It came from Phoenix, Arizona. Previously owned by Capt. Gil Delgado of the United States Air Force. (hence the pictures of it next to the Stealth Bomber etc)

It's your classic American 356, Silver with Red. It's definitely for driving, not for polishing. The Arizona sun has baked the paint good and proper, it's got a wicked sun baked finish.

Although the underside is solid as a rock, never welded, never likely to be, the usual areas (door bottoms, bonnet edge) have some signs of rust. the rusty luggage rack just finishes it nicely and goes well with the plate, RSTYTUB.

It's got a newly rebuilt 1600 super motor, new wheels and everything works as it should, except the Tachometer which has a broken needle. Oh yeah, during shipping the handbrake went missing!!! (real helpful) luckily I managed to get one from the states the next day for $27. Sure beats the £300 that an un-named UK Porsche "Specialist" wanted for one!

anyway, providing I haven't bored you to tears feel free to scroll down and hopefully you'll see some images. More to follow when I get home from work.

Headlights have now been converted, handbrake installed and it's going in for an MOT next week. Not long until it's registered and tearing up the roads!

Just got to decide whether to leave it alone, looking as good as it does, or slam it onto the nice set of Polished Fuch's i've got waiting in the garage! Any feedback greatfully recieved.

Dan.

Dan,

I luuuuurve the patina, the originality and the rough -around- the- edges look of your car. However, I would attend the rust- however nicely you whisper sweet nothings to it, it 'll spread like wildfire in our climate

But rather than a full blown resto: how about jsut attending the doors and the scabs instead?

I know i know, you take one panel off and you find yourself in a 5 year restauration but i'm thinking more preservation rather than restauration.

Mark is a current "our generation" example of a Proper Porsche (4 cylinder) old scool man in the UK- no doubt about that.

Good luck

looks sweet fella, love the colour scheme. Definately get the rust sorted and drive the hell out of it I reckon 8) Looks wise is tricky, slammed on fuchs would look awesome but then it already looks pretty sweet as it is.

funny thing we drink in the same pub and his car is less an 1/2 mile from my house!!!

we are getting a right old Flat four bunch local to me ( one sold 912 last year about 500 yards from my house  ) I will have to plot on the map where every one is and start to do more Southern Runs.....and trips out.. if every one is up for it........ I can name 5 912 owners with in 15 mins of my house!! 9 356 owners with in 20 mins of which 3 are Pre A's and ones a cab

looks like the South is the place to be!!!

I had another picture of a beautiful naked woman with a tool in her hand but it was a little inappropriate...

Loving it.

The door is shot anyway, so it can only get a bit more shot! Unless it upsets you then leave it 8)

Oh and get it down... 8)
