How to clean out a petrol tank ?

Ive stripped and repainted my t5 '60 tank but it stinks of rancid petrol inside.
Its solid enough, just wandered if anyone had cleaned out theirs with anything easily available- something Id like to get done this weekend.
I was thinking just sacrificing a fuel can worth of petrol by swilling it around and letting it soak up the cr'p might be enough?
