Gearbox / Transmission rebuild Information

Post by 58A - 71E »

I cant believe its a year on since I last did anything with the 356 (the 911 has had all my spare time in the last 12 months) but I'm in danger of getting some enthusiasm for it again

The last job I did was strip the gearbox down after identifying it as a 519 dual mount but with a knackered dog tooth ring

http://www.ddk-online.com/phpBB2/viewto ... ht=gearbox

I sourced a new dog tooth ring for second gear from PRS, and have bought all new bearings for it. Now I've just go the small job of putting it all back together

Anyone got any info on doing this? The crown wheel and pinion are apart - in fact everything is apart

There is a listing on pelican for a shift fork jig but it is NLA, which it claims you will definitely need to do this.

Anyone know if there are special tools required or what the potential bear traps are with this sort of thing??

Hi James - shurely Mike Bainbridge is your man for this? He is a gearbox specialist after all..as well as being generous with advice in my experience..

James,

The Bear Trap is setting up the Ring and Pinion with the correct Mesh / Tooth Pattern / Backlash - although it is easier to see what you are doing on a 519 Box as opposed to a tunnel box

You say it is apart - if you know which shim came from which side of the Diff Carrier you do at least have a good starting point

If you want to tackle this yourself you do need the section from the workshop manual send me a Fax number and I wil photocopy it for you (after Hedingham)

Was hoping you'd spot this Mike, yep I'm going to have a go at it myself  that's not to say it might not end up in Billericay with a note to say sort out this box of bits please

sending you a PM with Fax number for the workshop manual pages - many thanks indeed :)

Hi
if you don't already have an Elfrink book on 356 repairs etc get one it has a very no nonsense approach to everything including a fine section on gearbox rebuilds , also please do replace your syncro rings as they kind of work the hardest in the gearbox especially second to third , ring and pinion mesh is critical but you seemed to do a fine job on you 911 engine so should not be beyond you!
yours Bill.
I am a person of simple pleasures so if you don't have any simple pleasures to offer me, beer, pizza or Porsche bits etc kindly leave me be, XX.
