Looking to buy a 356 - am I dreaming?

Post by RichiRich »

I've seen a 356 for sale that needs some restoration (see pics). It's up for €3950, which I think is a little cheap. I'll admit it, I'm a 356 virgin and don't know much about restoring them or what they're worth in this kind of state. I've seen fully restored 356 cabrios for €65k upwards which scares me!!

Can anyone offer some advice as to how much it would be to restore to a usable standard (not concours)? I'm going to try to contact the person selling it - who knows, it may well be a hoax or scam!

Are you going to restore it yourself or have it done by someone?
The car (and I'm not sure if it is a genuine cabrio) looks like it could have some serious body issues, if you can see things wrong on a small photo then they are going to be worse in the flesh. Also check the engine as the exhaust is a VW one, could be VW engine in there. Does it have it's cabriolet roof (expensive to source/replace) or interior?
Some more details on the car would be good.
That said it does sound cheap.

That's what I was thinking Graham. There's just something that's not quite right about the rear of that car.

The seller was uncontactable - I think I'll stick to looking for a 911 or 912.
