Suspension?

OK after lowering the sky high front end on my 912 (originally US height)all of 1 inch I took it out last night with 2 passengers on board. When I took a relatively hard corner with bumps on it sounding like it was bottoming out over the bumps. Is this normal for a car which is not particularly low? Do I need a stiffer front end perhaps?

Have you gone alittle too low?

Or have you got worn out shocks

I'm not sure if it applies to your 912, but the usa spec 911's had a spacer on the top of the front strut. If you remove this you will gain some more travel.

If it is fitted & you have lowered the car there is a possibility you'll bottom out the front shocks.

I don't know what years this applied to though

Hmm interesting. Will I see the spacer from inside the bonnet area or from underneath the front wing? Thinking about it the car does have a alot of body roll on corners so maybe the front shocks are worn out, I always thought this was due to the lack of anti roll bars on the 912?

Mine is lowish at the front and i don't have any bump issues I am still on the old shocks and I have new ones here to put on.. Mine is also a US car. I have had 4 people in the car..

Not sure at the mo, (I did measure it at the time but I don't have the car to hand at the mo to be sure, I've just dropped it back in my mates garage so can't check till next friday). What I do know is that when I got the car it was still at its 'tall' US ride height. The front measured approx 1 inch higher than the rear. All I have done is to wind the front done (approx 1 inch) so that it is now level with the 'stock US height' rear (from the ground to the bottom of the wheel arch).

As an approximate guide, on level ground & ideally with 3/4 tank of petrol, measurements from the ground to the centre (highest point) of the wheelarches are 25.5" (F) & 25" (R) for standard European ride height*.

This gives the correct 'nose down' stance.

Lowering the front & rear by 1" makes great improvements to the handling.

* These measurements assume the original size of tyre is fitted (185/70x15)

OK, thanks everyone. I don't think I'm that low yet, does this sound like my front strut inserts are on the way out or does anyone have any other suggestions.

The only clonks I got at this \/ height were hitting the tarmac and speed bumps!

Its up a couple of turns now, with no issues, daily use. Sounds like you have something else up down there that might just be more apparent now?

Hmm, maybe you're right. Does anyone know how I tell if my front struts are knackered? Is it the usual bounce the front end up and down and see if it keeps bouncing or is there something else I should be looking out for?
