WANTED - 1.5 inch OD 914-6 tubular headers

Post by amallagh »

Does anyone have any 1.5" OD tubular headers for sale ? I need them urgently.
New or used does not matter.
Bursch make then in 1&1/2", 1&5/8" and 1&3/4". It is specifically the smaller 1&1/2" ones I need. Another make is OK as long as they are the same size.
They will be about 1&3/8" ID (35-36mm) but are traditionally identified by their outer diameter.
(I have some new 1&5/8" ones for exchange if anyone wants them)
Regards

I'm trying to get some quickly in the UK if I can. As ever there are loads of places to get different types in the US. These ones are expensive compared to Bursch ones which I can get for $433 from Performance Products. Problem if the postage, duty and vat is nearly as much again.

Anyone else want anything from Performance Products in the US ? PM me if you do. As long as you now exactly what you want and you are quick then I am happy to combine postage with my items and share the cost. If I can't get anything more local then I would want to do this asap.

Rich aka Turbo Thomas www.turbothomas.com has a pattern for "six" headers and should be able to produce them in any diameter you request .
I'm not sure the word "quick" features in his vocabulary though

Have you tried Mittlemotor in Germany. I got some headers (and the rest of the exhaust) from them for my 914 and found them to be from Patrick Motorsport. They may therefore have them in stock and thus deliver reasonably quickly. (And it was cheaper than buying direct)

Thanks
Tried them already but very expensive (749 Euro+ postage)and long lead time for a mild steel item. They said they were made by 'European Racing'.
Hard to beat Bursch ones on price and with the experience of my 1&5/8" ones they are decent quality and fit was good. (Only $415 for these in the US but clearly postage, VAT & duty to add to get them here). I would prefer to get some in the UK if they can supply quickly and be competitive on price with the US ones incl shipping/VAT/etc.
Given the US shipping costs & duty then I would have hoped this was possible !!??
This post was really to see if anyone had a set at home or in stock or who wanted to swop for my 1&5/8" set. If this does not yield anything than there are a coupe of shop options for me to try here in the UK and in the US.

what difference does the extra 1/8" make and what port size (engine) does 1.5" fit? Are the stud patterns all the same?

If you look in Wayne Dempseys 911 engine build book there is a table showing engine size and appropriate header size. I went for the 15/8 inch headers for my 914-6 from Patrick Msport and found them to be a good fit.

I have an original set of 2.0 914-6 headers with the exhangers cut off but they would need a lot of work - only keeping them as a pattern.

It is PMO that have reccommended using 1.5"OD headers. I can't afford to take any chances with the time I have left before the Classic Marathon so have decided to go with what they have said even though I have a brand new set of ceramic coated 1&5/8" headers.

Hi Andrew,

are you sure it's not worth trying the car with your existing ones? Don't forget the PMO data may be based on a 911 application and not 914-6. Obviously a 914-6 has longer headers than a 911 so it may be an advantage to have slightly larger diameter pipes as the exhaust gases have to travel further in a '6' before they reach the silencer.

As exhaust design is a bit of a black art, unless the PMO data is specific to a 911 engine in 914-6 application they have empirically tested, I would use what you have already got... (IMHO) and save a few quid..

kind regards

I think there is every chance you might be right Rob, but I am left in the terrible situation of having no time to try something out before the car has to be ready for the Classic Marathon. I am forced to take the best advice I can from PMO. They know it is for a 914 but as you say their data may be from a 911 application.
These need to just bolt on and run after I wasted 9 weeks trying to have my injection set up by people who with the benefit of hindsight didn't know about MFI. I now don't even have a moment to spare. Carbs arrive next Thursday, fitted Friday/Monday, Rolling road Tuesday !
Because everything on the car has been rebuilt I need to get it running asap to tease out any other issues before the Marathon & International trip. There are bound to be some.
I'm now just praying it all come together in time. After 18 months of solid work I can't believe I'm in the situation I find myself. Car was originally planned to be finished for the MSA Classic last year !

Anyone want a brand new set of 1&5/8" lovely silver ceramic coated headers for a 914-6 ?

Nothing came up 2nd hand so have ordered some of Turbo Thomas (Thanks Tom) who has promised to do them quick for me to meet the rally deadlines.

If anyone wants a new set of equal length Bursch 1&5/8" OD headers, silver ceramic coated with a proper matching gasket set then let me know. £350 including the gaskets. They cost me £415 to get them from the US + £80 to have them coated + £30 for the gaskets. I think £350 is a bit of a bargain for what is effectively a new set of headers. You can see how good they look from the picture above. The finish is very durable so they will stay looking like this in use.
