Oil Seal Help

Hello,

I need to replace the oil seal that goes just behind the pulley in the 3rd piece of the engine. As I'm new to all this I just thought I'd ask for any advice & words of wisdom anyone can offer with this job!

I'm assuming that the 3rd piece has to be removed to change the seal - is that a correct assumption? And does the engine need to come out to to remove the 3rd piece? Is there aything else I need to know?!

Any help greatly appreciated!

if we are talking about the seal I think you are the answer is NO

it would be difficult to replace it while still in the car sure.

But once dropped out with some care it can be removed.

There is a slot where a screw driver is alowed to just sit on the outer edge of the seal. You will have to distroy the old seal to get it out.. but don't go too mad as the crank is behind there..

I have changed 3-4 while it's still in place.

Good idea to replace these seals as they are old now and leak, infact it will make a difference. What colour is the seal you are putting in?

If you do the seal on the rear of the engine, eg the flywheel side make sure you BUY and fit a new bolt as they are USE once and once only

I've considered doing this job myself as i get a little bit of oil from there - but to be honest, it is so small its not at the top of my list.

It can be done with the engine in but you need to support the engine with a jack. Then remove the support bar and rear tin (and exhaust i think)

You'll need a puller to remove the pulley.
There is supposed to be special tool for installing the new seal (p73?) but i think a 36mm socket will do it if your careful.

The seal I'm putting in is brown. Is that good?!

Yes

There are the Dark Orange ones which are the best

Black ones which seam to start to leak again once they have been fitted

and these brown ones which I'm not sure on where they come from as yet but do seam to be softer and I would have said should do the trick long term.

The black ones I replaced one twice because it still leaked..
