'74 Carrera 2.7

Post by Ferry Man »

I’ve bought another car. Yeah, I know, another.
Still, it was too good to miss.
Thanks to a lead from Nick Moss I’ve bought a ’74 911 Carrera.
The proven pairing of Mr Moss & Mr Madden should see it restored and back on the road.
We will restore the car back to standard configuration.

The 1974 model year saw the introduction of the ‘impact bumper’ cars.
The top of the range Carrera shared the same 2.7 MFI engine and gearbox as the previous year’s RS model.
The early Carreras are well regarded these days (no doubt a legacy of the renowned engine and similarities to the revered RS). Unfortunately not many survive and whilst thirty-three UK salted winters would see to that, it may be because some cars were broken simply for the engines & drivetrain.
In fairness, breaking this car would be an option to turn an easy profit. Needless to say, that won’t happen.

The car was dismantled when found and has had a less than elegant eighties body kit fitted.
Many years storage and lack of use have helped save the car. However, it’s certainly not rust free.
Whilst it currently looks a little sad, it is very complete and more importantly still retains its original engine and gearbox.

I was excited to tell everyone on DDK about the car we’ve found but I concede that this isn’t really the place to discuss the ‘later’ cars. If there is interest here I’d be delighted to tell more but meanwhile I’d recommend strolling over to the forum on impactbumpers.com where there’s already a couple of threads started about the car.
Some of the history unravelling already is fascinating.

Best wishes with it Paul: I saw it at Nick's on friday. Looks to be a pretty good proposition.

I agree with you on the colour as well  .

Is the plan to finish the other one first, or do them together?

Other one?
Oh, blimey, yeah, Nick never mentioned that one. I wonder how it's going?
Good point Barry. I better nag him, see if those steel ST arches are ready yet.

Hey Barry, you haven't got an English wheel have you? And a spare evening?

glad to see another 2.7 Carrera being returned from the dead

that rust looks like about a couple of hours work.....easy

Excellent choice !
Being a '74 it would look right with a ducktail .
Look forward to your progress reports.

I got terribly excited about this discovery over on impact bumpers.com; It is great that a modus operandi between a professional porsche restorer and a porsche driver can result in saving some pretty rare machinery for posterity.

The fact that carrera's were, in the day, often owner by "personalities" can be an extra sweetener. But irrespective of the "hype" around a car, the fact is that the end result will be simply awesome. For some, pre 73 or not, the journey is as enjoyable as the the goal.

Well done Paul and Nick and great that you can share this info with the rest of us,
