Normally the US has been a rich picking for early Porsches for the last 10 years but it does seam the word has got round

It's shame in a way the values are going up like they are.. As for one ddk'er who was looking at a Pre a a while back we found a nice one but he stopped bidding at £12k I bet he wished he just gone that little bit further..

Don't worry it'll be back for sale when they've restored it and realise how different it is to drive compared to a "modern" 356.

hmmm not rubbing it in. We all have done well with rising prices, but to be honest I don't like having the Pre A going mad like this... why because more cars are then out of the reach of normal working people. The very people I think who should have the cars in the first place.. rather than cars being bought restored and pampered in AC garages and owners too worried to take them incase they might crack their white walls due to damp air and the air temp is 5'c below it's factory build..

Hey ...I think this is a bit strong ....I think some of us have some projects/cars which we begged borrowed and did just about everything else legal to get our hands on a few years ago....for the vast majority of us we have no interest in selling them for profit unless its to get our hands on soething else that will be even more fun and have us in more debt . When he could have been an ebay prostitute Mark has often shared parts for really reasonable prices to keep the stuff in circulation with the people to put cars back on the road and use them. As for his Pre A, its a lovely car and has probably frustrated him as much as mine has in wondering just when we will get them back on the road.
Its tmes like this you look around and see what average projects are making and wonder if what youve signed yourself up for is really worth the hassle ... But it is

Thanks guys but all in all serious it is power to the people as we are all here chatting about them and have all been brought togeather because of them. I haven't been asked to join my pension forum?? or my share fourm if there was one

I don't think there was a swipe at me personaly really as any one who knows me, knows I made a make for break decsion to buy these cars, if not then read, how I turned £500 into what I have now.

I mentioned another DDk'er as he and I had a few chats and one very drunken one in London where I set about finding just about every Pre A I could find and passed on the details to him. I found a great project 1/2 done but in the end the guy put it in Evil bay so it went over the £12K sterling mark and he stepped out. I personaly thought it was worth the risk but I took my risk and won. I can't ask other people to take the same risks as me. Hey I had a £100 Fiesta on a T plate from a scrap yard, as my daily and i took out a loan to buy two wrecks rather than a nice safe daily..could have all gone terribly wrong and been saddled with a huge bank loan which I would have had to sell my house to payback

Next my wife and I split and I sold every thing I owned to keep the house and pay her off. So dreams of a 356 or 912 went out the window. But I still kept looking thinking well I will buy one, one day! Just not any time soon. Then out the blue a 54 Pre-A project car came up for sale. It was in America again but too far from any one I knew who could look the car over for me. I asked the seller to send me more details. He did and photo's followed via email but I couldn't wait so I called him that night. We spoke on the phone and he told meI was the first to call and he would wait till I returned with an answer to him. Well what a star he was. I found a car half way around the world with no one to view it for me and er oh....... no money!!!!!!. So what does a sensible newly single guy with no money do..Get a bank loan. So One car halfway around the world, one car I had not seen nor anybody else, one bank loan and one newly single guy looking to do something for himself. Well most would say what the hell are you doing, and they did!!! So I did it anyway.

But talk about money and you leave yourself wide open. I think a Gentle mickey take. I think that if all cars are not restored to 100 points and people are doing it themselves shows that they are doing it for the love and not the money.

I think that Mark was only trying to say that prices are going silly and isn't it a mad world.

The thing is as well, if we were all in it for the money wouldn't we be selling around now before the bubble bursts?
More power to you Mark for taking the risk in the first place, I did exactly the same and took out a bank loan I couldn't really afford to buy my first one. Everyone thought I was mental.

Would you do the same again?

I mean now i have saved abit and got a new life, my own company and i'm doing ok. But I wouldn't do it again!!
Yet when i had nothing it was the bottom and any thing was worth the risk as long as I had thought it out first.

Great times and the people who said we were mad!!!!! I see they still drive a ford focus and go shopping on a Saturday morning and wash their car on a Sunday morning ready for work on Monday..

No I wouldn't cripple myself like that again, then again if the right car came along........ a RHD '51 coupe maybe (I know who has it).
However when I bought the cab nearly 4 years ago I financed it by re-mortgaging the house! My dad came with me to look at it and said quite forcefully that I shouldn't touch it with a bargepole. I don't think he has recovered yet from when I told him I was buying it (I lied to him about how much I paid so the shock would be easier on him).
And everyone still thinks I'm mental, don't know why.

Have to be honest and admit that my 53's staying exactly as it has been since i bought it in '92ish: seized engine, shagged box, glass out, doors off, no trim propped up on axle stands... but as prices rise there's no need to touch it really. Ms Beeny often says 'if you'd sat on it without doing any improvements you would have made the same...' Wise words Beenybabe and you can sit on it whenever you're in town

I know where your coming from, my dad is the same.. I talked though the deal when i bought both cars and he just nodded and said yes lots then ...... I speak with him and said ok I have bought them they are on the way... he went mad..WHAT!! and we both ended up in a row. now he asks to borrow the 912 every now and then

Cubist you should get that one of yours going really, I wish now I just got mine back on the road rather than do a full resto and gone for the rat look for a while..
