912 running abit crappy

Post by wilkie »

I've had my 912 for about a year and done about 2500 miles. Always drove well with smooth acceloration. This morning after about 10 mins of driving it started to struggle at about 3000revs. No strange noises, just didn't want to go when I put my foot down. If accelarating gently it just about copped but any more that light accelarator pedal and it was almost as if it was missfiring.

I hope its just in need of a service but I would be greatful for advise on where to start. points, carb etc.

Many thanks

First thing I would check are the carbs. A dirty jet will cause those symptoms.

If you don't know the history of the plugs, HT leads, dizzy cap, rotor, contact breaker and condenser I look at checking/replacing those. Then valve clearances and then carbs.

Either dirt in your main jets or faulty fuel pump could cause it from the fuel side of things. Alternatively it could be incorrectly gapped points, faulty coil, condensor, or leads etc from the ignition side of things. I had a very similar problem with a beetle once where it would cough and splutter when you put your foot down at about 55mph and not go any faster. It turned out to be faulty fuel pump. Good luck.

Check the jets,

I have had stuff like this happen before pulled a jet to find some crap on the end..esp when it's been running fine before

only 2500 miles in a year

Sounds like a fuel/carb problem to me. air filters cleaned also as they can 'dust' up and strangle air fuel mixture when you need it.

But sounds like dirty jets

As always its a case of elimination.

Good luck

Your car comes off the idle jets at about 2500rpm so main jets could be the culprit as suggested, but I'd clean them all.
