Thanks all: now for the nice bit, all of those 'pottering' jobs that gradually improve things: more to follow.

BTW, Yes, Ian, that is the next project, and one that any budding Sheet Metal Students will get to see in October  .

Bit of an update: the car has been used twice since the MOT.

The first time I drove pretty steadily to a family BBQ, and it behaved pretty well, except that right at the end of the drive I heard a bit of a noise from the rear, in time with wheel revs.

Had a look, and it looked as though it was a lump of tut had found it's way into the rear brakes: soon sorted, and all appeared well.

Then, on the way to the wedding last weekend, one of the driveshafts really started protesting, induced I think by a bit of full throttle/third gear action. Two things became apparent then: one, the car is really quite quick when wound up, and two, one of the driveshafts was poorly.

As per the thread under '911', it turned out that one of the CV joints has lost it's grease, which had been replaced by a sorry mixture of rust and gunge. Driveshaft has now been re-built, and I'm looking fowards to being able to drive the car again.

Next stage is to quieten the car down with a pair of gear selector shaft boots ( I fitted these to the last car, and couldn't believe the difference they made). Also I want to put in the mountings for the four-point harnesses at the same time: might do these over this weekend.

More to follow ...

Where the nose of the gearbox reduces down to a diameter of 1 1/2 inches or so (and where the gear selector shaft goes into the gearbox), there should be a gaiter.

This goes around the gearbox nose, and into the rear bulkhead: when the tunnel cover is removed, you can see a round flange around the perimeter of the gear selector hole, and the outer gaiter doubles back to fit around this. This first gaiter bridges the gap between the gearbox nose and the bulkhead, keeping out some of the noise, and all of the fumes and all oil but any that leaks from around the selector shaft.

There is also an inner gaiter that goes tightly around the gear selector shaft on the gear lever side, which also fits around the same bulkhead flange. This one is a real swine to put on.

Ultimately though, these two significantly reduce the amount of mechanical, and in particularly, transmission, noise that enters into the car. To the degree that I thought that my original gearbox on my Gulf Blue car was about to expire. Once the gaiters were on, it sounded quieter than many overhauled boxes.

Well recomended, and stocked by Roger Bray (about 50 quid the pair, all in).

Yep: Ian, the reason that the inner one is so nasty to fit, is that it's a very tight fit around the flange.

Normally this would just mean that you pre-stretch it a bit, and pull it over. In this case though, there's so little room to get your hands in and pull it on and stretch it all at the same time.

No doubt I'll be cursing it a bit later on this morning ... :) .

Mind you, once you're expecting something to be awkward, it's not so bad. It's those jobs that you think you'll do 'because I've got a minute', that turn into the 4 hour (or worse) marathons that are really frustrating ....

I guess mine needs to be pulled over the coupler, but at least it is there :)

Good luck with that...

It needs to be fitted from that end, quite how it's ended up there I don't know!

:) Thank you Sir!

The photo does flatter it a bit, but it doesn't look bad at all really, and goes very well. No doubt you'll see it soon  .
