ride height

Post by jtparr »

my 2.7 carrera will son be going for its MOT (finally ) so the question is what height do I set the suspension

Its a 75 car (impact bumper) but now it has a backdated and RS Touring look I wonder what the height should be set at

can anyone give me a dimension front and rear....say from floor level up to undersice of arch ? or hub centreline up to inside of arch ? or an idea of what the clearance should be betwen tyres and arches

thanks a lot

measure to the top of the wheel arch, 25" at the rear, 25.5" at the front. I will defer to the stick if there is any discrepancy.

My car is set lower than standard (deliberately).
I'm running 24" at the rear and 24.5" at the front.
I think I'd like it better about half an inch higher.

That assumes standard tyres on an early car. If you are fitting low profiles you may want to drop the car so that the tyres aren't lost in the arches. If you live in Londan and/or have lots of speed humps around you may not want to get down to Paul's ride height

I'm running a similar height to Paul, but for true accuracy I rely on Mikes stick

TBH, it would be best to get the car fully aligned & corner weighted by a specialist who has experience with early cars & suitable suspension settings.

This was what I was aiming for, although my actual ride height is lower.

Height
front - 25.0 inches
rear- 24.5 inches
Taken from the pavement to the wheel arch lip.

**forward slope of 1 to 1.5 degrees.

Front
Camber
0.5 degrees negative +/- 10 minutes

Difference right to left 10 minutes

Caster
6 degrees 5 minutes +/- 15 minutes
difference right to left 30 minutes (?) my notes are not the best

Toe in
+15 minutes +/- 5 minutes with wheels

Rear
Camber
1.25 degree negative +/- 10 minutes
difference right to left 20 minutes

Toe in
+15 minutes
difference left to right 20 minutes

I am still supplying official sticks with the correct period stickers in the 72/73 colours. Only a few factory ones left. Beware of repros.

hi all

thanks for that

I'm going to take the car to GT One who are a local Porsche garage in Chertsey

I'll take these figures with me and have a chat with them

probably will not go as low as Pauls as speed bumps are around London and also our private road here at home

its not vital to get it absolutley spot on.....hey I've got the next 25 years for that

they cant do the corner weights but at least the tracking, alignment and ride height can be done

car is currently using

Uniroyal Rallye 440 rear tyres, 215 / 60
Fulva Y 2000 fronts, 185 / 70

but as they are of indeterminate age I will get new ones

I guess thats another question.....which tires ??? 8) 8)

I get tired going after a late night...

Oh tyres :)

Well you want those Michelin TB15 or XWX for the authentic look, but you struggle to get 185/70 in anything modern so go for 195/65 on the front as a really close match.

The back size is a bit obscure but you can get Pirelli P6000 N1 and Conti's in that size. I think 215/55 was original, although I'm sure I will be corrected:)

Jonathan - assuming you've still got 7&8x15's there are 3 basic choices:

185/70 (F) + 215/60 (R)

195/65 (F) + 215/60 (R)

205/55 (F) + 225/50 (R)

With each of these 3 options you have very little scope regarding tyre manufacturers offering the same tread pattern in both sizes but much more choice with option 3.

I have fitted 205/55 & 225/50 Falken ZE512 ZEIX tyres to several of my Porsches & have found them to be excellent & they have the added benefit of a 'rim protector' to help prevent damage to your freshly-restored rims.

been a while I know.....but I didn't drive the car fro the whole of October and its only now that the cars finally been driven a bit

In the end I bought Toyo Proxes TR-1 tyres, using the latter of Andy's recomendations

205/55 (F) + 225/50 (R)

got them from Black circle at I think a fair price, £ 55.26 each at the front and £88.89 at the rear, plus VAT that is

Being a muppet I had managed to put the rear torsion bars in the wrong way round so although GT One did a set up I was fairly prepared for the car to settle once driven

It is VERY LOW though 8) 8) 8)

which is borne out b the fact that it kind of scrapes its bum on just about anything and with all 4 of us in the car I managed to ground out on a bump with the fuel tank on Sunday....

its actually 23.5 inches at the front and just about 23 at the rear

after waiting a while to see if it settled anymore I'll book it back in to get it raised by a good inch all round.........

then I'll get the POR-15 back out and touch up the floorpans and tank...!!
