Which shocks for 912 rear?

Post by Timo »

I need a n/s rear shock for my 912 but am finding it very difficult to find any reference on the shock of what sort it is. I know its an oil shock cause its leaking! and its an orange colour but thats all I know. I am thinking I may be better off changing the pair of them but what do people recommend? there seems to be so many different sorts.

Hi there, if they're orange they are probably Koni, I'd say replace both with Koni, but it's all about personal prefernce so you may get some differing opinions here

I have Koni's on the rear of my 912 and Bilstein HD'S (firm) on the rear of my 911 and find them less forgiving (maybe as they're not adjustable???), oh and in my opinion those orange shocks do look much better in the rear 8) .

as a less costly alternative I think Mark picked up a pair of Boge's from Matthew at Type 911 http://www.type-911.co.uk/gp_suspension.htm £60 each as opposed to £130 each for Koni......by all accounts his car handled very well on the Silverstone trackday

whatever you do don't put some godawful kyb's on your car (or Kill Your Back as they should be called)

Hope this helps

Koni's are the prefured make as such but I have to say that the boge I picked up ( which Darren has listed there ) I have been more than happy with and at half the price. I also have boge fronts as well. He also had them on the shelf

arrived next day.. 30min job to do and a dream to drive now..( the rears )

Thanks for that people. Think I'll take a look at the Koni's and the Boge then and see what the difference in price is. :)

While we're on this does anyone know if you can still get Koni's rebuilt?

Also I forgot to mention in my first post that I'm thinking of lowering the car slightly in the future. Would this affect my shock choice ie: would I need shortened shocks if it was lowered or are the Koni's/Boge suitable for a lowered car?

If you're lowering the car this will mean re-indexing the torsion bars, and reducing the springplate angle. You'll not need any shortened shocks, the boges/konis and bilstein are all fine if you lower it, but you will feel the ride firm up due to the shocks being compressed a little more.

I lowered mine and changed the shocks at the same time, it's quite firm but a helluva lot of fun :P

What does re indexing the torsion bars involve? I understood that the front end has adjusters built in and I'm assuming that the rear is just a case of popping the spring plate off and rotating it a spline? I'm used to a firm ride, my last car was a beetle with a very low front end, the 912 feels like an arm chair in comparison. :)

You got it in one :) just turn the spring plate. Just get the new bushes before you start as the old ones will more than likely be scrap.

Email from Koni asking them about them I got this reply

Mark,

Those would be the rear shocks for a '65-68 Porsche 911 or 912. Made in the USA during the few years that
KONI
manufactured shocks in the US. They are a twin-tube hydraulic non-gas
charged rebound adjustable shock and that specific part number was
superceded years ago by 8040-1083 which is basically the same
shock
with a low pressure gas charge.
