SPARK PLUGS?

Post by timmyboy »

What plugs do people use in there cars, ideally 2.2t. I bought some plugs when I first bough the car off a well known retailer, not really knowing a lot (nothing's changed) I was sold and recomended bosch w5dc's. I now think this is the cause of my misfire problems. The ones that came out of it were w3cs and I never had a problem. I changed one plug for something else today, just to try, and it started firing on one of the cylinders that wasn't previously working making me think it must be the wrong plugs. I can't belive there would be 2 duffers in a set of 6? Or is this also possible?

to my knowledge (which is not a lot!)
w5dcs are perfect

i changed to w6dcs (a hotter plug) on a 2 litre as a test (w6dcs are not good for prolonged motorway use by the way (a little too hot).

i changed as a test because the w5dc's were getting sooted really fast and wouldnt fire on one or two cylinders (a typical problem on early cars fixed by fitting a capacitive discharge igintion system (CD) (but i didnt wanna do that i wanted to keep the car original). the old ignition system and coil set-up sometimes cant give enough spark, so slightly sooted plugs can mean misfiring. i changed all the ht leads and coil but the same problem occured.

anyway those w6dcs sooted up faster than the w5dc's so i changed back, leaned out the carbs a few turns and it cured it so far perfectly - no misfiring or heavy sooting. so i found running an older car with the carbs balanced leaner to my settings than my garage set-up as what they called 'perfect' is better with w5dcs.

(as i said i dont know much) others on the forum will know more.
but it worked great for me.
