I know what your saying but trust me I KNOW alot about plates..
most have been for sale for years. I even noticed one of my plates for sale.. odd as I have owned it for 4 years and not listed it for sale.. alot of the sites are out of date and most of the values given are way over the top anyway..I have bought most of the plates from dealers trading on these sites by offering the correct price ( which is about half ) and get a sale most times.. bar a few emails to keep at them... I dropped out of bidding for my plate a few years back I just didn't want to go any further and I have since met the guy I was bidding against £5500 for the only 356 plate, the auctioner said we had both bided above it's value
POR 356
I rest my case..

I would ahve thought £500-£1000 to be nearer the mark to be honest, they are quite happy to stick big prices on any plates as it fills up their catalogue but almost noone ever sell for these list prices.
Ive just bought V200 BUG for our NB for £400 and I also have V4DGE for a lot less. 356 plates is such a niche market that prices are never going to be that high as people out there simply wont know that they mean anything whereas 911 plates are a lot more established. They would also have to be something special in the lettering as well

Also I was going to buy direct from ireland North IUI 356 but a dealer caught wind and I was set to pay £450 for it and he some how got involved ( think the Northend Ireland DVLA have more leaks than a sive ) he wanted to charge me £850 I said no you can keep it.. later it was listed by him for £10,000 !!!!!! no joke I still have the print out.. it has since ( over 4 years come down in price ) to I think about £1500 and it was only the other week I had two letters from him, one a sales brochure with the plate high lighted and next week a letter saying make me an offer... so i sent back £450 my orginal and prob his buying price.. heard nothing..
they do try it on..
I did sell a lot of number plates in the late 90's and did well but as soon as 2000 come along the market has just crashed.. AS they say it's a good plate with a good price it will sell... others will just look like they sell but don't......this is coming from some one who said to an owner of his moms Ford Escort Ghia don't sell that car with out getting the plate off.. he later did just px the car to a dealer and the plate with it... the plate .......... oh yes the plate was worth well price this plate....

If I remember rightly I saw this plate on a silver RHD Carrera coupe - bet the owner still thought it was a bargain912uk wrote:I have since met the guy I was bidding against £5500 for the only 356 plate, the auctioner said we had both bided above it's value

but probably no different to any outher auction, if on the day 2 people really want something prices always seem to go crazy, but doesnt necessarily represent an item's true value - although I would like that plate myself

so it must be on retension.. Nice guy we had a joke about it..
I think he would have gone to 10 + I was bidding with my whole 356 resto fund!!!!!

Sightly off topic, but can I ask what sort of reg mark you got to replace the one you are selling?
I am at the moment considering a '56 356A Super with a single figure, three letter mark which the present owner would want to keep. It's probably worth more than the car in it's present state
I have phoned DVLA and spoke to a robot who answered every question with 'you will get an age-related number'. I think he was stuck in a loop
.
I know from dealing with the local DVLA a lot that age related numbers are not always available and they will give you the nearest they have, even though it makes the car seem newer. I had a struggle to get a 'V' number replaced with a 'J' on my 71 Beetle Cab.
Just wondered if it would be worth sending the CT application to Swansea rather than the local office.
The transferring number stage is a LONG way off, but it's a big factor of the deal.

I did get a 3 number 3 letter replacment so all work out very well in the end. I have changed a good few plates in my and have allways had a good replacment maybe i am lucky that way. I have two regs for sale at the mo the other is a 4 number 2 letter plate which agian was replaced with a age related plate. Best of luck with your deal.
