I thought my broken bar was 36 years old, how wrong could I be!!!
Make that 9 years!
Genuine Porsche torsion bar and snapped clean off. Not a trace of grease on it though and plenty of rust at the exposed end. A clear demonstration of why you are supposed to cover them in grease...
The little foam seals at the ends of the bars seem to have done a fine job of holding some water in place. The may have kept the inside of the wishbones clean and dry, but they seem to be the cause of the rust.
The other bar has the same rust on it and has thinned down by a good couple of millimeters, so will be due to crack any time soon!
I will put new foam seals on with some new bars, but it seems that you just rely totally on grease to stop the rust...
When I swapped the 914 front arms + struts for 911 I thought the foam seals were pretty lame so I put these rubber gaiters on. I Must go back in and grease them thouroughly though. I might swap back to the foam because once any water is in the rubber won't allow it to evaporate.
If anyone drove through a ford (as if) I bet the A arms completley flood
