Sticking Throttle

Post by SimonInd »

Hi,

I'm new to the forum and have a 1973 1.7 914 that's still running on it's stock fuel injection. I've had it for nearly 7 years but it gets little use nowadays. Yesterday I took it for a drive (first time in months) and the throttle seemed to be sticking intermittently. Is this something I can have a go at fixing? (I'm not much of a mechanic, but am willing to have a poke around) or should I leave it to someone with a bit more knowledge/experience?
Any advice appreciated.

Thanks
Simon

Simon

Welcome to the forum. Sticky throttle cable could be anywhere - best thing to do is check the throttle pedal end and then check the engine end (should be on top of the centre of the engine (under the oil bath air lilter if I remember correctly). If nothing is snagging the cable it could be that the cable is catching in its tube somewhere in the centre tunnel and may need replacing.

Hi there Simon,
Mine does exactly the same.
One thing you can do is shorten the spring which is located where the cable attaches to the throttle valve housing, but may make pedal stiffer.
I've got a new throttle cable waiting to be fitted but can't find anything in any of the workshop manuals I have that shows how the cable is routed??
An advice here would be also appreciated!
Cheers,
Alan

is this a recent development Alan? it never happened to me :?

if you want to replace the cable it runs through the centre tunnel, it's reasonably easy to do but you'll need to remove the pedal board, centre consul, centre pad (between the bottoms of the seats)

disconnect the old cable from the throttle valve and push it to underneath the car (noting it's route for the new one), attach the front of the new one the the back of the old one, next go inside the car and try and find the old cable in the tunnel (nearest the firewall), once you've got it pull it through into the car when the new one gets to the tunnel opening you may need to get underneath and fiddle it into the tunnel, one it's inside and you've eyeballed it, run it through the tunnel up to the pedal area, then reconnect to the pedal. (that's the fiddliest bit), then run the back of the new one up to the throttle valve connect it up and adjust. (nice to have an assistant to make sure you're getting full throttle with the pedal to the floor)

Hope this helps & good luck with it :)
