914-6 GT project workshop
My 914-6 is due to arrive from the US on 5th April. Plan is to convert it to GT race spec as soon as it gets here and I have all the parts ready to do it. Also plan complete respray and colour change so its a big job.
Does anyone have any recommendations of who would take this on and do a good job in a resonable timescale. I've contacted some of the usual suspects but the level of interest has been disappointing. I want to sort out who is going to do the job this week. I have a fully detailed scope and picture set.
HELP ME !!!!
As there are 3 key factors -
1) Quality -
Need someone who knows what they are doing. Don't have to be a 914 expert but don't want to use a 914 virgin if I can avoid it. Definitiely need experience and track record of preparing race cars (cage, chassis stiffening, electics, extinguisher, etc), preferably Porsches. I'm not looking for a concours job but prep has to be spot on and a good finish.
2) Timing -
I need the car finished before end July. I have all the parts necessary and the money to go, so this a no hassle job for the right workshop. I need some who wants to do the job and is prepared to get stuck in.
3) Cost -
Needless to say, needs to be competitive. I'm working to a budget and can't afford to just throw money at the car, but I'm prepared to pay a fair price. This is a 250ish hr job depending on who you ask.
I'm in North Cheshire - closer to here the better but for the right workshop for the right price I'll take it anywhere ! (within reason)
All suggestions gratefully received.

Good bunch of people that know racing and Porsche, and don't charge silly money.

Hello there.
I'm intrigued what you plan to do with it..the GT has normally to run in a class in which it is way off the pace..
Also, going to the GT spec can be done cheaply using a 914-4 as the abse car under FIA rules..no need to start with a genuine -6.
If its not wide-body, and is a genuine -6 you will find many more places to race it competitively ...especially in the UK..
Do tell!
Kind regards
David

Thanks for this. Never heard of these guys but being Ferrari specialists doesn't encourage about getting a competitive rate ?Gary71 wrote:How about JMH?

I'll give Jason a call on Monday but can you give me an idea of the hourly rate they charge from your experience.

914-6 GT project workshop ?
My car did start life as a 4.davidppp wrote:Hello there.

Looking to do the GT spec for no other reason that I love the look of it. Engine is currently a 2.2E with a few mods but still runs original injection.
Are you implying it would be possible to get an FIA Historic Passport ?
Do you have access to the homologation papers that allow this ?
What other race series do you think it would be eligible for ?
Large part of my plan was to do Classic regularity events on the Continent, plus some trackdays and maybe some sprinting in the Porsche Club championship. Would love to do some racing and have plenty of track experience but none racing.

You can get a historic technical passport if your car conforms to the specification it would have done when raced in period. This should be to the letter, but I imagine there is some leeway. The car would not be eligible for an FIA heritage certificate as a 914/6 GT as it hasn't been one all its life. The full details of how the 2 different documents work are on the FIA website - there are other pages but the 2 below are a start

Out of interest I spoke to Jason today but he said that he doesn't really work on the older cars any more.Gary71 wrote:How about JMH?

MSA Historical Technical Passport requirements
Am I right in saying that any 914 car can get a Historic Technical Passport if it complies with the homologation papers from the period ?autohausdolby wrote:You can get a historic technical passport if your car conforms to the specification it would have done when raced in period. I asked the MSA if they would accept a 4 cylinder car that had been converted to 6 cylinder and they said they would consider it. I'm still waiting for a reponce.
Am I right in saying that the only 914-6 with Homologation papers was the GT cars with 2 different 2.0 litre engine specs ?
Does this mean that any other engine combination from the period would be unnacceptable ?
MSA told me that there is only one 914-6 currently registered with a Technical Passport ! They admitted that there was plenty of speculation about other national organisations on mainland Europe being less than rigorous about the application of the requirements. "But they couldn't possible comment"

Re: MSA Historical Technical Passport requirements
I wouldn't profess to being an expert by any stretch of the imagination, and I'd be wary of accepting the advice of anybody that does who doesn't have very recent practical experience. The FIA is changing the way it looks at older cars (or has been doing recently)amallagh wrote:Am I right in saying that any 914 car can get a Historic Technical Passport if it complies with the homologation papers from the period ?autohausdolby wrote:You can get a historic technical passport if your car conforms to the specification it would have done when raced in period. The best thing to do would (IMHO) find someone who has done historic racing and ask them.
