914 Flywheel

Post by hughicol »

Does anyone know for certain whether or not a VW 2 litre van flywheel can be used in a 2 litre 914?

You could try Volkspeed in Loscoe, Derbyshire. They used to import them years ago and used to have spare engines knocking about.
Worth a try anyways.

I reckon so. The clutch is interchangeable and the diameter is the same (215)
I have one in my garage but it'll be a few weeks until I take my gearbox off so I can size them up against each other then.
You may have to re-paint your timing marks though.

the size might be right but the starter gear/teeth might be abit different, I'm not sure, just have a gut feeling about it.

Thanks for all the advice and tips. I'm a little puzzled as to why I should have to repeaint the timing marks as mine are located on the cooling fan not the flywhell.

Pelican have the part number 022-105-273A-M260 for 914 flywheel, the 022 part is a VW van code, I think

I just realised I responded to the wrong thread, should have been the one in the wanted section

The flywheels a defo different, not interchangable ie if you have a 914 you cant put a bus flywheel on and put it back in ya 914, if I read you Q correctly Dave..

The bus has 3 different sizes 210, 215 & 228, they do fit but wont work with the 901 box

Thanks you have confirmed what a Yank emailed me i.e. the van flywheel although similar doesn't match up with the 901 g/box something to do with the position of the g/box input shaft.

part number for van ends in 271 whereas the 914 ends in 273A

Just measured the bus flywheel against a 9146 flywheel (which fits the 901/914) and the OD is different plus the starter ring tooth patern is way off.

914 Flywheel

The 914/6 flywheel is different as the clutch and all parts are totally different. Part number for the 914/6 flywheel is 901-102-026-01 whereas the 914/4 is 022-105-273A. The VW Flywheel has same number of teeth(130) and uses the same starter motor.

However, it's is evident from all the replies I have, including a couple from Pelican Parts(USA), that the VW flywheel is the same in all respects except the positioning of the bearing for the the drive shaft from the 901 G/Box.

The 914-6 flywheel has a different bolt pattern but the four cylinder clutch should be interchangeable with the 6 (albeit with different part numbers).
Out of interest I will definitely take some pictures of the bus + four flywheel side by side when I get time to split engine + gearbox few weeks.
Sounds like my '2.0 bus' flywheel might be something else .. :?

You will notice when there alongside each other the 914 flywheel it deeper than the bus or type 4 versions, the disc is different because of the 901 box splines also the pressure plate. The 914 is unique to the Type 4 style engines, but similar/same?? as the 914/6 & early 911.

914 Flywheel

So, to sum up, the bus flywheel is different(as the yank said -won't match up with 901 G/Box) and the 914/6 is similar but as the teeth on the flywheel are different it too will not be suitable, in fact it is probably as difficult to locate a 914/6 flywheel as it is a 914/4.

Everything is sent to try us, lol.

Dave

PS anyone know where I might get my flywheel refaced as the groove isn't that deep?

Did you not try Volkspeed for a s/h one?

Any machine shop should be able to do it. AFAIK you have to take the same amount off the clutch plate mounting surface.
