If the car was manufactured (not registered) on or before the 31st December 1972 it is tax exempt - if it was built later, it's not.

I'm afraid I think you're out of luck - the last 2.4T chassis number built in December '72 was:

911.350.0834

:(

My car is a 1973 T-E originally from California. Chassis No. 911.311.2018. This sounds like a stupid question (311 being less than 350) but is that an earlier number than the one you quoted above? :? i.e. Was my car actually built in 1972 and have I been paying too much tax for the last 5 years?

The reason I never checked before was because the car came with a letter from Jeff Moyes at AFN Heritage saying the year of manufacture was 1973. But I'll be well chuffed if I don't need to pay tax anymore!

Cheers,

John

John - I'm afraid it doesn't work like that.

The 2nd series of 3 numbers in the VIN indicates the year/engine type/body style:

310 = '73 mfi T Coupe + CIS T Coupe
311 = '73 mfi T Targa + CIS T Targa

320 = '73 mfi E Coupe
321 = '73 mfi E Targa

330 = '73 mfi S Coupe
331 = '73 mfi S Targa

350 = '73 carb T Coupe
351 = '73 carb T Targa

The last mfi T Targa made in Dec '72 was VIN 911.311.0781 & the CIS T Targa ( which wasn't built until Jan '73) started with VIN 911.311.1001 so your car was definitely built in '73 - in fact it was close to the end of the '73 model year.
