Glove compartment won’t lock
Hello.
Any thoughts here?
I truly can’t remember if I have a key to lock the glove compartment but I do have two keys that fit. Well they slide in nicely. But it wouldn’t operate the lock.
Haven’t really used the lock since I’ve had the car. And owned the car for 14 years. Could the lock be seized sitting in a garage all these years?
How do I know if it’s the right key to operate the lock. It’s a remade replacement key as I don’t see any Porsche marking?
Would I be able to get a the right key?
Thanks

Re: Glove compartment won’t lock
There will be no ID on the lid box visible, possibly no ID on the key either, esp if a re-cut by someone.
Some car lock specialists will be able to take the lock apart once out of the lid and change the wards to suit the key you have or cut a key to suit the wards in the box lock barrel.
I think there are 3 wards.
Some time/years ago someone on here seemed well versed in all this and sorted his locks/keys out. Key barrel assemblies are quite fine engineering.
The Porsche locks are very typical of the era, Wilmot Breeden made millions of them for the UK industry, Porsche may have used Valeo.
Might simply be easier to buy a new lock/keys!

Re: Glove compartment won’t lock
This was on Pelican...........dependant I suppose on the year of your car......do those keys work your door locks, and ignition if so may be copies of the valet key?
Your car should have come with 4 keys, and one small one if you had a Bosch antennae.
Two blacks fit all locks and two reds that do not fit glove box or trunk lock, if so equipped. (aka valet key)
The geometric shape of the black rubber heads are opposite for the reds. Many repos ignore this minor detail.
My 73, 76, and 77 are all labeled DOM on the top bar.
Glove box keys were always matched to the door locks - just that the red key should not open the glove box.

Re: Glove compartment won’t lock
Hello and thanks
I checked and I have one key and a spare that fits the door locks and also operates the door locks. That particular key fits the barrel of the glove box very smoothly but cannot turn it. I’m now thinking it’s seized considering I’ve had the car 15 years and never operated it.
I’m thinking of removing it and letting it soak in diesel for a few days.
That may work?
Thanks Lee

Re: Glove compartment won’t lock
Or just spray AC50 or WD 40 in their with the fine nozzle extension leave for a day and SLOWLY try and rotate it?
If that works spray white grease in there, otherwise the WD 40 will probably dry out the springs, tumblers and wafers.

Re: Glove compartment won’t lock
There is useful info here regarding locks:

This pic shows the difference between the Red valet key that can't open the glovebox and the black key.

Glove compartment won’t lock
Hello.
How would I know I have original barrels I do have my key number on my kardex. It’s a K series key.
If I ordered new. Do I get a red and black key for my 69t. One for ignition and one for doors and glove?
Update: just called my local Porsche dealership and no keys available only blanks available unfortunately
Thanks Lee

Re: Glove compartment won’t lock
Is it possible your glove box lock has been changed? Or maybe you are using a valet key?
If you are using the non-valet style key, you can recode the glove box lock to match, as discussed here already. However you will require different wafers.
Or just leave it…

Re: Glove compartment won’t lock
I have no glue if a valet key it’s a remade non original key that opens the doors but not the glove. I’m away but going to get the wife to soak in in a jam jar of wd40 until in get home. I’m away at the moment unfortunately
Thanks for the comments
