Removing old loctite case sealnt off engine part faces?

Post by 911hillclimber »

Anyone know if there is a demon trick/potion that will remove the old orange cured sealant by Loctite used when building the engines we love?

Maybe it is just hours of joy scraping and chipping the stuff off, esp around the root of the studs??

I believe that new orange sealant softens old sealant, but I just manned up & used a razor blade as a scraper.

Thanks both.
Have ordered some of the remover, funny how £11 suddenly becomes £21!

I was obviously over zealous when I sealed this engine last time, and the build-up at the base of all the studs is annoying. A day with a razor blade and other things does not appeal, so will try science first, but I bet I'll have to scrape too!

Yes, get yourself a packet of Stanley blades as well! I also used a red scotchbrite to finish up.

Hi - a Stanley blade window scraper may help to save your fingers. £2 from Toolstation. Worth a try.
Kind regards

Yes, those do look good, see if I can get some tomorrow locally.
Also going the make a semi circular scraper that I can push down the stud to it's base and so chip a lot away at a time. The old seal is hard and tenacious!

A job for tomorrow once I've cleaned some more moss off my vast front drive block paving (unless it is raining, so time in the garage)

GP on tomorrow, so wife will be occupied!

Porsche state in the workshop manuals that there is no need to remove the
old 574 from engine cases because, as PeterK says, new sealer will soften
the old sealer. I never trust this method but have found by smearing a small
amount of new 574 on top of hard 574 and leaving it for a while that thinners
on a rag will remove it easily.

Cheers

Andy

What an odd thing to do by Porsche?
That old sealant gets covered by old engine oil etc, what a mess!

Just seen the Stromski device for splitting the case....

Bearing Boys potion from Loctite arrived today, just as I was to de seal the cases. Smells like Nitromores, stings like Nitromores, so...

Anyway, in a nice aerosol and it works.
