Driving to Watch the 1000 Miglia?

Post by neilbardsley »

https://1000miglia.it/events/1000-miglia-2020/?lang=en

It's been moved to late Oct. I've been thinking about a road trip, in the 356, to watch it. However, it's a long way to get there. Trying to think about how many days it would take so we aren't driving 5 hours every day. Looking at the route maybe Calais to Nancy on the way then onto Northern Lake Garda. Then watch the start and explore Florence / Siena (when the cars come back). Perhaps 9 days would make the trip more enjoyable. Any other recommendation or places to stop on the way or back. Places to visit in the area? Trying to weight this up against just pottering around Brittany for a week or trying to visit Denmark.

Sounds like a brilliant trip. One place I would call at if you have time is this car museum at Mulhouse in France....

Did it last year, BIG TRIP and lots of motorway miles by car, hard slog even in the Boxster, but the event is to die for.
Got to do it if you can.

I think all motorail has been stopped in France? I found Dusseldoft to Innsbruck but stops after August :(

I've always fancied doing a similar trip - but would want to do it more leisurely over ~ 3 weeks & avoid motorways wherever possible.

Probably in my Alfa Spider ...

Have you seen Harry's garage where he takes his Spider but has it transported to Northern Italy

Ah that’s a shame as it’s the one I used to go to the Mille a few years ago and was about to suggest

Our trip was Midlands to Calais, to Antibes in south France, across to Italy for the start of the MM.
Brescia to the Lakes, to Murano, to the Alsace to Calais, to home.

Worst part was motorway to Italy from Antibes, lorries and lorries and lorries.....

Just over 3000 miles

I have a trip log about it all, but it would spoil the adventure for you.

I did it in a few years ago, Portsmouth to Venice - 1000 miles in a day, in a ‘72 911, wouldn't recommend it though :-))

Very cool event great atmosphere !

what are your plans Neil? Find out the route and wait somewhere each day to see them pass? Or drive the route after them? I had toyed with this idea in the past but not sure how busy it is and how easy it is then to find parking, lodgings etc

Watching Harry's Garage. Goto the start and then the square in Seina. Looks like most roads are open to the public and you can join in for bits. Being respectful of course. It would also be a shame to be in the area and not visit Florence. Have to mix the places visited if Mrs B is going to spend 15 hrs each way in a car.

Will probably leave to the last moment to book as who knows what will happen with Cov19 in October.

However, will try to publish stops if anyone wants to join us for some of it

Florence?
That will win any girl's heart Neil, fab place, don't rush it. Buy her a pocket sized surprise and give it to her in a small 'round the corner' restaurant, the world will be yours! :)
Great fun to zig-zag across the route. There was a a big earthquake when we did it first time round...

The Police love to see them blasting about, so all good fun.
