Staycation time

Post by Ignatzcatz »

What are we all doing whilst we are stuck in our country homes, council flats and caravans during this wicked isolation programme. Being that we are all cool Porsche owning dudes I would imagine we have garages full of projects and things to do. Personally I am out on my bike most mornings and have some very overdue gardening to take up my time, but what methods are you folks employing to keep you sane and active. Do tell.

SWMBO needs a routine, so it’s a 2hour walk at about 10:30, followed by lunch. That’s in the garden if it’s sunny, or with an hour’s telly if it’s not. Then I’m given my chores - normally gardening unfortunately. Then I’m allowed to play with the SC Targa in the garage until tea-time. After tea, it’s virtual drinks over HouseParty with different friends (hers - I’m not allowed any of my own), then TV, then bed and repeat .......

I wear the trousers in our house. SWMBO just tells me which pair I can wear

My good lady wife mentioned she fancied a new chest of drawers so I set too making something with a nice bit of quartered French oak I had hanging around. Then on Tuesday I remembered I had a parcel of Madrona burr veneer tucked under the bench and now the chest has fancy drawer fronts.

I love this new pace of life and the reduced workload. Am thinking we should get a horse and cart and start wearing clogs. :)

My plan for evenings was to finally get around to editing my resto videos. One week in & I haven’t even connected the hard drive with the original uncut videos

I am meant to be at work but self isolating because of symptomatic daughter. She was tested yesterday and I don't know whether I want her to be positive or not..

In the meantime, I am like many people across Britain, prioritising making my parcel shelf tartan.

Practicing with telescopic bore gauges with an old bearings and a cheap Chinese micrometer.
Cause it takes “feel” to get decent measurements I’m told!

I’m going to see if I can build up to running 50 miles before the end of lockdown.

That way if it’s a long lockdown it won’t be too upsetting as I’ll be more likely to hit my goal.

This win-win tactic can be extended to other things in life, eg always bet £5 against your favourite football team winning. If they ever let us play football again.

And catching up on all the books I have bought but, until now, have not had enough time to read. First in the queue - '32 Ford Deuce by Tony Thacker, then Edelbrock made in the USA and not forgetting of course Derek Bell - All my Porsche races. Love all this spare time!

Despite having to stay home and drink beer most days, I've managed to finish Hayley's chest of drawers. Assembled it looked a bit of a pigs dinner.

Image

So I wire brushed the oak frame and then fumed it with strong ammonia to bring the colour down.

Image

Image

...Polished up the panels, fitted some castors...

Image

...and some knobs and the job's finished.

Hayley was pretty excited about getting a new piece of furniture.... me too, it's a bit cobblers kid's round here but then an architect friend of mine made me an offer and now I have to start again and make another chest of drawers for my wife. This time in yew I think.
