Road Trip ideas - Pyrenees or somewhere else?

Post by yoda »

I usually do a trip around Wales 3 or 4 times a year for a quick fix and have been to the Alps several times over the years for a longer, week long drive. Looking for somewhere different and was thinking the Pyrenees, Scotland or Austria but looking for some ideas. I prefer to have the routes and stops planned and scenic mountain roads decent food are important. Happy driving approx. 8 hours a day but don't mind doing a bit more if needed.

Does anyone have experience of the Pyrenees or other good road trips? Would love to get some ideas and routes etc.

Many thanks

The Picos region is very very popular with bikes, some great looking roads, most of them get the the Santander ferry and use Potes as a base, but in car I think you would be better going further a field, say across to Northern Portugal which also seems to have some very goods roads

I took to portsmouth to Santander ferry, then drove the n 260 - great drive, very reasonable top quality hotels (on spanish side) - highly recommended, look at map depending on trip duration for stop offs. Pyrenees flatter than the alps but beautiful and quiet out of season. We drove back up through france and got the tunnel home.

NC500 also great out of season ;-)

Have you considered the Classics on the Road tours. I did the Picos Mountains last November with them and had a wonderful time. They didn’t drive 8 hours a day, but it was a friendly event and all five star hotels, so very comfortable. They do tours for all the main makes, but I took a Porsche to a Rolls-Royce and Bentley trip without issue except that local interest was all in the Porsche, so it got scratched and covered in sticky fingerprints.

Thanks all for the feedback. The Picos keeps coming up so may be a good place to start looking.

Clive - Yes please, would love details of your NC500 tour and plans for the Pyrenees. Thanks

Come to a round of the 2-Litre Cup next season? We are at Ricard, Spa, Dijon, Monza and Estoril. Can build a good road trip around any of those?

Clive sent me his NC500 route and I have built one based on this which I am doing with a couple of mates next May. Roads will be busier as its in season, but one the guys is a teacher so not much choice. Will post up something once I complete it.

Not only the 2-Litre cup at each event, of course.
A little trip to Paul Ricard in April and / or Estoril in October might be a pleasant escape to better weather?

I thought about taking the Ferry to Santander too and driving around the area. Has anybody drove down from Calais instead. Even with an overnight stop might be cheaper/more fun than the Ferry?

It’s a very long ferry journey or a 700 mile drive from St Malo never mind Calais which is miles from anywhere. I prefer to travel with a group coz it helps pass the time.
