Wiring loom........spotlights on hold....

Hi, me again.......

So, the auto electrician came today....turns out my loom is shot (melted and generally screwed). I need a new one, anyone got any suggestions? I don't relish spending €2,800 on from from Kroon......

Thanks but its probably a bit far gone...if Im ripping it all out I may as well replace it properly, its just I never thought a bit of wiring would be €2,800!

There is a fella who advertises in Hayburner magazine who a friend of mine used who was highly recommended. I will see if I can find his details.

May be a silly suggestion, depending on originality, and how easy it would be to get an inexpensive replacement loom, but would a VW Beetle one fit most of the system, as they seem to be readily available?

I've just finished cleaning and reconditioning the loom from my car. It wasn't a job I was looking forward to and I think some of that was down to not having a clear understanding of how it all worked. So like most projects on my car I set about educating myself. With the aid of colour wiring diagrams I was able to familiarise myself with it and fix any issues.

I've now taken something that looked ready for the bin and turned it into something that looks almost new.

Before writing it off completely I'd pull it from the car and really give it a good looking at. I'd be very surprised if it couldn't be repaired.

Thanks, I have spoken to Jeff Bowlsby but he said no one makes a chassis harness......my choice is either a used one or make my own.....

Ive just made a section of wiring loom for my BMW 2002. Once you get your head into wiring diagram and source the right wire, it isn't as difficult as you might imagine. My loom is back in now, but it is something I would consider doing in the future

Hi All

I have managed to source a replacement harness in the US (no idea what its like but for $50 its worth a punt!), which is great news. Thanks for your help.

Now the tricky part....

I need some help removing the old harness and refitting. I know I will need to strip out quite a lot but ideally I want to strip out the minimum of the interior so could use any instructions/tips/photos anyone has to help me.

I don't need to remove the engine harness.

Any help greatly appreciated.

That's good news Ben.

The bad new however is it's going to be a huge job and will require quite a lot of dismantling. I doubt you'll be able to replace the loom without removing the dashboard and other than a couple of pieces of carpet and the door panels, almost everything else will need to come out of the interior - seats, carpet, centre console, armrest, speaker panels and back pad.

In the front trunk you'll also need to remove the fuel tank as the loom goes underneath it.
