Calling all 356s, 912s, 914s + early911s
Here goes...
Rashly, I said I’d try and put a small convoy of early Porsches together to make a stirring DDK entrance into the big Classic and Supercars Show on Sunday July 21st. It’s in a great part of the country, at Sherborne Castle down near the Dorset Jurassic Coast. This year Porsche is the featured marque.
Some of these shows can be rather static, but at this one they have a good tradition of having the crowd line the driveway and welcome in these convoys, or ‘tours’ as they call them. As they arrive, a knowledgeable commentator interviews each owner/driver about their car’s story, before we then park up in a special reserved section.
I’m looking to invite about 12-15 air cooled cars, from across the years of 356/912/914/early 911 production, to join me with my 356 in the convoy. (I was thinking first of a 1977 cut off, but maybe we should include right up to the 993.) I think it’ll be a great sight that will be well appreciated by all the show goers.
I’d love to keep this as much a DDK thing as we can - after all we’re enthusiasts and actually get out and use our cars - like on the Flat 4 drives, and numerous trips to Le Mans, Spa etc
But that’s only going to happen if it makes sense for you to travel down here and enjoy the weekend. (If you want to come just for the day that’s absolutely fine of course.)
For the rest though I thought maybe I’d need to organise something a bit special - for those of you who’d need to overnight here in this lovely part of the world.
We could call it THE DDK JURASSIC COAST TOUR.
I’d try and get a group booking (with parking) in a Dorset country hotel, or good guest house or big pub.
We could all meet up first on the Saturday (July 20th) lunchtime, at one of the great beach cafes down on the coast, and maybe then have a nice afternoon drive-out around the fabulous coastline (with route book), ending at the hotel for drinks and a good meal.
On the Sunday morning we can make a nice leisurely start after breakfast, meet up with any local cars joining us, and then take the relatively short drive to the event to arrive at Sherborne Castle about 11.15. It’s a great show to look around when you’re finally parked up. If you need to get a quick getaway after that it’s pretty easy to get back on the road.
Some of you of course might like to stay on down here on the coast for a short break in what is often the best part of summer.
Now I know that just getting here for many will be a really big ask, but it’ll be very different, and hopefully very enjoyable for the right people and right cars, and something that I’m sure you’d enjoy taking part in.
If you could post any interest you may have here pronto (no matter how provisional), and let me know more about what Porsche you’d be in, that would give me an idea if it’s all a runner or not. If we get enough interest then I’ll put together more detailed plans. It’s going to be the beginning of peak holiday season down here then, so sooner the better.
Below is a link to a website for the event, with a promo film. I’ve been to it several times, and it’s a good one, with lots of well sourced cars - last year they made £40,000 for charity, so you’ll be doing your bit towards that too!

Great news Peter and Sean, and some other good responses too. Any chance of you coming South James?Peter wrote:Sounds like an excellent idea. I’d be up for this.
Sean’s 912 I know well.
What Porsche might you bring Peter?

Yes indeed Sir, the date is fine and you're only a quick squirt down the M27 so please add my name to the list of hopefuls. With a bit of luck my 356 should be up and running on all six cylinders but it if it's still on the ramp it'll be my '86 SSE. Trust this will be OK.

Hi Jeremy,
This does look really interesting and if I can try and get a few things sorted before then, then I would provisionally be very interested. I could join a mini convoy with SeanP from Essex and look to slow him down a bit
