High Torque Starter Motor
Looking for recommendations for a lightweight high torque starter motor for a high compression 2.7 litre early air cooled engine.
Two I have come across are from Powerlite and Wosperformance. However, no idea of quality or longevity. Thanks Kirk

Re: High Torque Starter Motor
My personal experience:
I have fitted lightweight high torque starters to several early 911's & my 904 in the past (911, 915 & 914 transmissions) & all were very effective/totally reliable.
In each case the starter was purchased from AES (Auto Electric Supplies):

Re: High Torque Starter Motor
I have used Wosp starters for years on my own and customers cars, great people and product. Occasional snags sorted immediately and cheerfully. I source through AES, Recommended. W

Re: High Torque Starter Motor
Winston, Thanks for the recommendation. I have been communicating with Luke at Wosp. Very helpful especially dealing with my semi ignorant questions. Seem to have a range of suitable starter motors from 2.8 kg and 2 kw up to 4kg. The high power lightweights apparently use rare earth magnets which push up the price. Still pondering at this point. I have used AES myself for wiring bits and bobs and they are very efficient.

Re: High Torque Starter Motor
I can add that I have an AES starter on my 3.2 engine for the last 5 years and it has been perfect.

The AES starter is a WOSP. I ordered one after CLM.
Very good quality starter and a very good company to deal with. Have used them for all sorts of automotive electrical items

Also consider Brise. A bit more expensive but a bit more special and a lot of Motorsport cars use them. http://www.brise.co.uk/Porsche-7633091AXGAC.html

Thank you Sean and Ian for your contribution. Ian do you have any direct experience of the Brise product? Kirk

Re: High Torque Starter Motor
….have one of those too on the Lola, it has been outstanding and is very compact with a unique design for a starter motor.
Not sure if they still make them though?

Re: High Torque Starter Motor
Only that I bought one from Fenn Lane a year ago and have yet to fit it. It’s sitting on my work bench and is far too nice to bury in the bowels of the car, it’s like a jewel! They are axial and very compact. Not sure if they still make them but worth asking.BILLY BEAN wrote:Thank you Sean and Ian for your contribution. Re: High Torque Starter Motor
Some customers' cars have come in with the Brize units fitted. They look and work well, though i suspect they are the same base units as those used by Wosp. The Axial starters are remarkable, compact and very powerful. I have Wosp one on 'Wasp' which is a very tough start as it's a long stroke V twin with a 13:1 compression ratio, that will kick back if the crank speed is too slow. I have mangled the internal gears once, again fixed cheerfully and quickly by Luke. W

Re: High Torque Starter Motor
Thanks Graham, Ian and Winston. The Wosp units use a Denso starter as it's basis and have 11 teeth and are "offset" starters. The most expensive lightweight 2kw is £445 plus VAT. The comparative Brise is axial which makes it more compact and has 9 teeth like an original Bosch fitment and is a little cheaper. Trawling the internet seems to suggest both makes can have issues of fitment and break down but both manufacturers respond quickly to sort things out. Thanks again for the input. Kirk
